Personnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Chips Moman, J.R. Cobb (guitar, background vocals); Reggie Young (guitar); The A Strings (strings); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Jon Marett (alto saxophone); Donald Sanders (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Bobby Wood (keyboards, background vocals); Bobby Emmons (keyboards); Mike Leech (bass); Gene Chrisman (drums); Toni Wine, Rick Yancey, Andy Black, Sherrill Parks (background vocals). Engineers: David Cherry, Chips Moman, Larry Greenhill. The Steve Goodman-penned title cut of City of New Orleans was Nelson's umpteenth number one hit; other highlights include his renditions of "Please Come to Boston" and "Wind Beneath My Wings." ~ Jason Ankeny By the mid-1980s, Willie was consistently topping the country charts. He had also softened his sound, opting to record with smooth Nashville studio musicians rather than his funkier live band (although distinctive harmonica player Mickey Raphael continued to appear on Willie's albums). CITY OF NEW ORLEANS typifies this period of Willie's career. The album consists entirely of ballads, only one of which--"Why Are You Pickin' On Me"--was written by Willie. Other tracks include the Steve Goodman-penned title track, previously a hit for Arlo Guthrie; the rhythm-and-blues standard "Just Out of Reach (Of My Two Empty Arms);" David Loggins' "Please Come to Boston;" and "Wind Beneath My Wings," later a huge hit for Bette Midler. The sound of this record is mellow and easy on the ears, as was much of country hit radio during this period. City Of New Orleans Music City Of New Orleans Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) One of Willie's Many Forgotten Works! For many years, Willie Nelson has made so many albums as if he was giving away candy. It could even be difficult to keep track of some of them. Many have been completely forgotten and lost in the shuffle, especially as some future releases have overshadowed them, and this album is no exception. Willie sounds as good on this album as any he's ever made, with no weak tracks. In retrospect, "City of New Orleans" may not be a classic, but it's one of his 80's releases that will definitely appeal to the Willie faithful, and that's about it. It may be considered just another one of Willie Nelson's lesser albums, but if you love Willie, you'll love "City of New Orleans". | | Glenn Miller Centennial Collection CD (2004) Bonus DVD; Remastered
City Of New Orleans
$14.89 This CD/DVD combination package, issued in celebration of Miller's 100th birthday, features 20 of the Glenn Miller Orchestra's top tunes on CD and a special 1 hour DVD documentary of Miller's life, including performance and interview footeage with band members and Jimmy Stewart.
Personnel includes: Glenn Miller; Tex Beneke (vocals, tenor saxophone); Ray Eberle (vocals). Recorded between 1939 & 1943. Includes liner notes by Ed Polic. Glenn Miller was one of the most popular recording artists from the late 1930s until he died in a plane crash while leading an army big band in 1944. While his orchestra was more of a pop band with jazz leanings, with relatively few solos by individual members, his music had mass appeal during a troubled time in American history. This two-disc set celebrates the centennial of his birth by collecting a number of his biggest hits while remixing them with 24 bit remastering, along with a few surprises. Musically, the instrumentals stand the test of time, especially the lovely "Moonlight Serenade," "Tuxedo Junction," the swinging "In the Mood," and "A String of Pearls." Among the vocal tracks, "Chattanooga Choo Choo" has continued to appeal to new generations of music listeners, though novelty numbers like "The Boogie Wooglie Piggy" and "Pennsylvania 6-5000" haven't aged all that well. Three previously unreleased airchecks appear for the first time, including a peppy rendition of Jelly Roll Morton's ...
