(61 Customer Reviews)
A surprising amalgam of punk and metal, with a dash of emo, Finch's full-length debut is a powerful statement of first principles from this Temecula, CA quintet. Kicking off with the storming, anthemic "New Beginnings," they rush headlong through a set that positively bursts with uncorked energy, from the chiming, mid-tempo "Post Script" to the punky "Stay With Me."
Green Day fans will find themselves on familiar territory here, but there's more to Finch than mere punk rock duplication. Nate Barcalow's passionate vocals have a palpable ring of conviction that's echoed in the band's ensemble performance, and the intensity never lets up. "Project Mayhem" is a particular high point, displaying the band's musical smarts with some almost Beefheartian twists and turns, and if you find this prospect disconcerting, there's always the perfect pop rush of "Three Simple Words" to bring you back to earth. WHAT IT IS TO BURN is pure youthful passion.

What It Is To Burn songs
$6.85 Although much is made of this Utah foursome's rebellious background (singer Bert McCracken's former drug addiction and the band's pre-record deal pan-handling street-kid lifestyle), all that's really required to ascertain the level of the band's commitment is a close listen to their self-titled debut release. They leap into each song as though their lives depended upon it (maybe they're not so anxious ...

With an EP and several full-length albums under their collective belt, the Ataris made their bones with five years of hard work, leading up to their debut for Columbia--SO LONG, ASTORIA. Principal writer/vocalist Kris Roe drew inspiration for the album's concept from author Richard Hell's novel GO NOW, exploring his past stomping grounds with a Polaroid camera and a notebook. Recapturing the essence of past memories made excellent fodder for the songs that make ...

$25.55 Wild Child, Valerie Carter's 1978 follow-up to her debut Just a Stone Throw's Away, was clearly designed to broaden whatever audience she may have had gained in the prior year. Really, she didn't make that big of an impact in 1978 -- the debut peaked at 1982 and spent five weeks on ...

What It Is To Burn songs
$10.15 Tom Bolton started writing songs when he was sixteen, pretty much as soon as he got his first guitar... when he wasn’t surfing or skateboarding or drawing. The next thirty years were a strange chaotic journey into music, with plenty of detours, distractions, frustrations, confusions and the odd moment of bliss and inspiration. Somewhere back in the 1980s, one of his songs was used in a documentary soundtrack, and also recorded by Victorian folkie, Fay White, on her “Trees, Stars and Other Wonders” album.A bunch of stuff happens, life goes on, the songwriting continues, stops, starts again, some collaborations take place... and eventually, in 2003, he records his first album “Acoustic Caravan” under the stage name, Sensible Tom. This is a sparse production featuring vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonies and percussion. The songs are the distillation of many years moving around, living in different houses, spare rooms, caravan parks and traveling. A number of the songs were co-written with Min Flipo ...
