Leo Sayer's JUST A BOY contains the songs "Telepath," "Train," and "Another Time," among others.

The British reissie adds bonus tracks and an interview with the artist.

Before Richard Perry took Leo Sayer to the top of the charts in 1976 and 1977, his former bandmate and sometimes songwriting partner David Courtney provided all the music to Sayer's lyrics here and co-produced with manager Adam Faith 1974's Just a Boy album, featuring the Top Ten 1975 hit "Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)." Leo Sayer had a geeky appearance on this album cover, as well as on the Endless Flight and Here albums, though he got trendy during the disco of Thunder in My Heart. Just a Boy lacks the gloss and sophistication of the later releases, including the Courtney-produced Here in 1979, but a break-up song like "When I Came Home This Morning" has naïve charm and shows the potential. The underproduction actually adds to the aura of the singer/songwriter persona, and one can see why Three Dog Night chose "The Show Must Go On" from his Silverbird disc, hitting a year before "Long Tall Glasses" from this fine effort. "One Man Band" is not the same composition as Three Dog Night's 1970s hit, but it rocks, two sets of musicians providing the accompaniment, with different personalities coming in to add their flavors, like Keith Nelson's banjo on "Long Tall Glasses" which supplements Paul Keogh's slide guitarwork. "Another Time" features songwriter/co-producer Courtney on piano, as does "Giving It All Away" and "Telepath." Sayer's vocals also have a warmth and intensity that don't reflect the image he portrays in the smiling/laughing Terry O'Neill back cover photos, or Humphrey Butler-Bowden's interesting cover painting. With all his own success on the charts, interaction with other stars, and visibility as a hit songwriter for others, it is interesting that some of the fine work here wasn't picked up by more of the '70s artists who were in need of hits. Where Neil Sedaka's catalog got a good going over, a beautiful song like "Solo" is here in these grooves with its musical references to both "The Show Must Go On" and "Long Tall Glasses." A better production and different take on the ideas might have been a Godsend for those artists in need. Just a Boy maintains a good feel throughout and is a very entertaining set of performances. ~ Joe Viglione

Compiled by Ekkehard Ehlers, this album of "new music for new children" originated from a good idea and was surely put together with good intentions, but the results are lukewarm at best. "Here's a space to be silly, with the children," says David Toop in his notes. But silliness and cuteness don't suffice to make a children's music record or an avant-gardist take on the form. This CD collects 25 tracks, mainly by artists from Germany and Japan. Roughly ...
Dandy In The Underworld
T Rex Dandy In The Underworld CDs  (1977)

Just A Boy CD music
CD $17.45  3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
The 1997 reissue of DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD features 5 additional tracks that did not appear on the original release; "To Know You Is To Love You (To Know Him Is To Love Him)," "City Port," "Dandy In The Underworld (Single Version)," "Tame My Tiger" and "Celebrate Summer." PRINCE OF PLAYERS is Edsel's alternate version of DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD. T. Rex's final release came out in 1977, when punk emerged like a ragged, safety-pin bedecked David to strike the Goliath of progressive rock square between the eyes with a well-aimed, rough-edged rock. The musical landscape has never been quite the same since. Marc Bolan, always a keen observer of musical trends, was quick to embrace the punk ethos, even declaring himself to be its godfather. But DANDY is no punk record. It's an eclectic set, but all in all, it sounds like T. Rex. "Jason B. Sad" has a "Get it On" flavor, while "I Love to Boogie" has a similar feel to the classic "Jeepster." The title track, a midtempo groover, sports synthesizer textures and slick production. Yet these songs show Bolan's heartfelt commitment to classic chord patterns of '50s rock & roll, as the cover of "To Know Him Is to Love Him" further attests. It's hard to hear the punk influence here: certainly "We love to boogie/on a Saturday night" is a far cry from "I want to be anarchy..." But in an era when rock was becoming increasingly self-important, T. Rex shared the essential punk preference for songs that were fast, simple, and disposable. Marc Bolan's abbreviated career and profound influence on '70s rock and beyond has guaranteed an extraordinary level of interest in everything that he and T. Rex produced. As a result, alternative versions of most of T. Rex's albums have been issued, brimming with working versions, demos, and odd bits and pieces. While 1977's DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD was a return to form, it was not a genuine hit. However, it showed that Bolan's singing and his ability to pen short, dirty-sweet ditties were undiminished. DANDY'S outtake album, PRINCE OF PLAYERS, is a pleasant grab-bag of late-period T. Rex, including rocking live recordings of hip-shakers like "Groove a Little," "Hang-Ups," and the anthemic title track, all of which are much raunchier than the originals. On a stripped-down "Jason B. Sad," a helium-voiced Bolan sounds like a cartoon sprite, but the unmistakable guitar riff is pure T. Rex. Among the unexpected treats: Bolan's vocal on "Pain and Pleasure" is more pure and ...
