The cut and paste hip-pop ethic of artists like Beck was quickly absorbed by the mainstream, but the format's unpredictability also guarantees there will still be stranger practitioners lurking at the edges of the musical landscape. One of the most interesting is Minnesota one-man band Howard W. Hamilton III, and the jumbled-up assemblage of this album -- a few new tracks plus B-sides and other oddities -- unsurprisingly suits his magpie style just fine. Hamilton's unshakable pop sense offers some recognizable reference points amidst the found sounds; "Autopilot," included in two different mixes, features a Prince-ly groove similar to the spacier moments on Sign o' the Times (think "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker"), while the previously unreleased "Better Books" could qualify as a Big Audio Dynamite demo. And the wonderful "Too Much Togetherness," an ode to solitary pleasures ("Too much togetherness make it hard to get to know her/Try a little loneliness"), has a gentle hook that's as nagging as anything in the Top 40. But things turn more disorienting elsewhere, with snatches of everything from dub to avant-garde soundscapes blurring the outlines of the dozen brief, lo-fi songs, most of which were recorded on iBook and eight-track. Improving with repeated plays, this collection is well worth the time it takes to get oriented to Hamilton's unique vision. ~ Dan LeRoy

Pure Energy album
$13.85 Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted to a pressing of just 2,000 copies -- is far darker and more experimental, as evidenced by the set launcher, "There Is No Music." Meshing a slide guitar with a brooding lo-fi feel, ...

Pure Energy music CDs
$12.69 This is a Lefty record that was recorded about five years ago with Stringbean Jones but was never released. Anyway, this seemed like a pretty good time to release it for no particular reason--a little birdie told us to put it out now, so here it is. It is mainly a kid's record, but it's good for adults too. So far no harmful side-effects have been reported.Review by Warren Truitt, children's librarian, new york public library:Friday, January 05, 2007***String Bean Jones***Holy cow! How could I have missed this one?!? Every so often somebody will bring to my attention a CD that has been out for a while that they think should be heard, and sure enough, they were right on with this album. It was like coming across a stack of old 78s in a second hand store, full of music you've never heard before and won't hear anywhere else.Jeff ...
| | Shining Grindstone CD (2007) (Import) Norway
Pure Energy songs
$15.69 The Norwegian quartet Shining plays high-octane prog rock with the untamed energy of newly minted punks, though their various lengthy experimental pieces are highly focused and performed with a great degree of technical prowess. Influenced by such genre-bending iconoclasts as the 1960s prog rock progenitors Soft Machine and '00s keepers of the flame the Mars Volta, the band's feats of musical dexterity span the dizzying changes of the saxophone outing "The Red Room" and the alternately pulverizing and delicate "Stalemate Longan Runner."
