This is the 1972 debut album by the short-lived Canterbury progressive supergroup Matching Mole, featuring the Soft machine's Robert Wyatt and Caravan's David Sinclair.
This was a short lived, but essential band in the annals of what's called the Canterbury Sound, created by British progressive ensembles in the late sixties and early seventies. The band was formed when Robert Wyatt was ousted from Soft Machine, which he'd founded in the mid-sixties. (He punningly-titled the outfit using the English pronunciation of the French translation of Soft Machine.) This 1972 debut opens with one of Wyatt's most gorgeous songs, "O Caroline." From there the quartet embarks on a series of tunes which run the gamut from invitingly alluring sonic landscapes and experiments, to free improvisation and more songs that hark back to Wyatt's earliest work. David Sinclair's keyboards add washes of cascading psychedelia over Wyatt's jazz-informed drumming, Bill McCormick's bass and Phil Miller's guitar playing. The band produced only one more album, LITTLE RED RECORD, later the same year. Their small output is an essential chapter in the innovative career of Robert Wyatt.
Reissue of the progressive rock act's 1972 debut album, that's unavailable domestically, packaged in a digipak. Columbia. 2001.

| Matching Mole (Millennium) Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) for the romantics This recording opens with the most beautiful ballad ever written. This is the reason I bought it. The rest of the album reqires a headful of dope, but is interesting as a requiem of early jazz-rock history. Submitted by a reviewer (Oslo Norway) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Canterbury Monsters!! While Soft Machine turned more into Jazz-Fusion, Wyatt returns to the further explorations over his intrincate drumming & humoristic songwritting. Maybe considered to be a "Drummers album", but indeed is one of the most powerfull canterbury-lineage albums of all times. Get this one and go. Matching Mole (Millennium) music CDs
$9.35 One of the Canterbury scene's most revered bands, Hatfield and the North made up for the brevity of their career with some fascinating music. Always adventurous, the quartet had the keen sense to realize that only the most hardened jazz fans respond to numerous key changes and exceedingly complex time signatures, and thus enlivened their live set with the odd gnome smashing, suggestive lyrics, and jokey song titles. It worked a charm, with the band quickly amassing a large, loyal following at home in Britain and across ...

$9.19 Hatfield and the North's second LP stands as a high watermark for the prog rock associated with England's Canterbury scene and, while filled with stunning musicianship, demonstrates both the strengths and some of the weaknesses of the Hatfield style. Dave Stewart on keyboards, Phil Miller on guitar, Richard Sinclair on bass and vocals, and Pip Pyle on drums (supplemented by a few guest instrumentalists and the ever-ethereal Northettes with their "la la" backing vocals) generally ...

The Light is the debut album from Spock's Beard, the Culver City, CA neo-prog rock band whose sprawling exercises in technical proficiency and suite-like compositions made them an underground legend almost immediately. One has to understand that The Light is nothing at all akin to anything being done in the mid-'90s. Yes hadn't yet made their full comeback, and the memories of Genesis with Peter Gabriel faded ever more pervasively form view with each subsequent Phil Collins solo release. Here are four sprawling, knotty, syncopated tunes, two of them, the title track and "The Water," are multiple-part suites that encompass no less than 48 minutes of the album's 67 minutes. In addition, this album was self-financed. (What "responsible" multi-national recording conglomerate during Nirvana-mania would ...
