When ethnomusicologists of the future look back on the cult phenomenon that was twee pop, they need go no further for defining moments than "Twee," the opening track on Tullycraft's wonderful Beat Surf Fun: A catalog of icons and totems that includes nods to Sarah Records, 14 Iced Bears, and the Pastels' Aggi Wright, its quintessentially adenoidal vocals and manic strumming culminate in the rallying cry "You can keep your punk rock, ska, rap beats and house, f**k me I'm twee!" It's fitting that such a statement of purpose would originate with Tullycraft, one of the true pioneers of American twee pop and, as of Beat Surf Fun's 2002 release, one of its few remaining proponents. Between its fizzy lyrics, brittle guitar riffs, cheesy Casio keyboards, and primitive rhythms, the record seems very much out of touch with contemporary pop; its ebullience and innocence hark back to a time that now seems very long ago. But sometimes, nostalgia can be a breath of fresh air. ~ Jason Ankeny

Tullycraft City Of Subarus CD  (1999)

Beat, Surf, Fun
CD $13.15  Audio Samples
The best thing about Tullycraft's City of Subarus is the album's title, and that's not usually a good sign for any band. The shy, gently sarcastic themes from the band's previous album Old Traditions, New Standards are in place, but the music and the lyrics are simply not as memorable. That earlier album was filled with songs that were easy to sing along to, such as "Josie," "Mental Obsession," "Superboy and Supergirl," and the charming, showstopping "Pop Songs Your Boyfriend's Too Stupid to Know About." The songs on City of Subarus are certainly cute and sweet as the twee genre dictates, but they lack the catchy factor by which lo-fi indie pop succeeds. There's something lacking throughout the album, as if some little piece of magic is missing. With both Tullycraft and Crayon, frontman Sean Tollefson was able to conjur up ample doses of magic in the past. The songwriting here lacks the level of polish of his past efforts. There's no fault to be found in the production; "Miss Douglas Country," "Vacation in Christine, ND," and virtually every track shines when it comes to the production's shambolic, lo-fi glory. Maybe "Actives and Pledges" works for Tullycraft and for the band's fans in a live setting, but the band simply ...

It's hard to picture a band more aptly named than The Gerbils, for if those fuzzy little creatures could make music, this is what it would sound like; chirpy, catchy, three-chord, lo-fi pop. The Gerbils, members of the touring ensembles of Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk ...

Tullycraft Disenchanted Hearts Unite CD  (2005)

Beat, Surf, Fun
CD $12.39  Audio Samples
You hate to call a record a great leap forward because it might somehow tarnish the bands' back catalog, but Tullycraft's fourth full-length album Disenchanted Hearts Unite is at the very least a big step forward. The record has everything the groups' previous efforts have displayed, like hooks, energy, and sharp often hilarious lyrics, but also has a maturity and richness that the others lacked. Songs like "Secretly Minnesotan," "Fall 4 You" and "Our Days in Kansas" are finely detailed songs with emotional heft and musical power, "Every Little Thing" and "Polaroids From Mars" have a much more muscular sound than the band has ever managed to have, and even the songs like the frantic "Building the Robot" and "Stowaway," that sound like old-school Tullycraft, have a newfound sonic punch. Sean Tollefson's conversational vocals are stronger than ever and his lyrics are peppered with jaw-dropping couplets that touch on all the things indie kids care about like heartbreak, record-store girls, and indie pop. The female vocals are another strong point as Jenny Mears adds lovely harmonies to most of the tunes and Jen Abercrombie of Rizzo drops in to duet with Tollefson on the wonderful "Fall 4 You" and "Building the Robot." ...

Recorded live in Paris, France and Toronto, Canada in 1976-1977. By the time the Rolling Stones got around to issuing the third live album of their career, 1977's LOVE YOU LIVE, the legendary band had reinvented itself from a dangerous and sleazy rock & roll group to a more polished arena rock outfit. That said, the group was going through one of the rockiest and most uncertain periods of its lengthy career; Keith Richards had just been busted ...

Keep On
Will Young Keep On CD  (2006) (Import) Import; Germany

Beat, Surf, Fun
CD $31.25
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. Will Young was growing up. It had been three years since his unexpected win on the first season of Pop Idol and even at the time of his second album, Friday's Child, he had stated his intention to distance himself from the moniker of being a TV reality show winner, especially as the careers of such winners tended to be notoriously short. So there he was on the cover of his third album, Keep On, looking remarkably like the actor Todd Carty, who played the weatherbeaten character of Mark Fowler on BBC-TVs Eastenders. On Keep On, Young was mature enough to write (or at least co-write) most of the tracks, including the first two, "Keep On" and "Switch It On," both quite funky numbers. Then came the album's first ballad, "All Time Love," every bit as tuneful as "Anything Is Possible" or "Evergreen," his debut single and still the best-selling single of the 21st century. There was a mixture of styles on Keep On, from the salsa, holiday-inspired "Happiness" to the Justin Timberlake pastiche of "Ain't Such a Bad Place to Be," on which even the Indian-style intro worked well, to the ballads ...
