Be Glad by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir is more of what they do best -- joy-filled gospel music. Their songs range from contemporary gospel ("This Is How It Feels to Be Free") to classic gospel ("Still Doing Great Things"), rarely wavering from their full, vibrant sound. Though a studio recording, producer Carol Cymbala does an excellent job of giving the choir a "live" sound. This is an uplifting, encouraging album that will satisfy anyone who enjoys gospel music. ~ Melinda Hill

Nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Choir or Chorus Album, HIGH & LIFTED UP is a first-rate example of contemporary gospel. It's worth noting that no solo voices are credited, but somebody singing lead here--particularly on the gorgeous title tune and a stunning "Battle Hymn of the Republic"--is doing so as though her life depended on it.
The huge (nearly 250-strong) group's characteristically thrilling massed vocals are backed by traditional gospel instrumentation (piano, Hammond organ, bass, and drums). Most of the songs here boast grand orchestral arrangements that sound curiously similar to John Williams-style film music. Things get further from the traditional gospel sound on the concluding "God of All Gods," where arranger Carol Cymbala adds middle-Eastern melody lines to the mix. Once your ear gets accustomed to that sort of thing, however, you'll likely sink right in to the plethora of pleasures offered by this unusual, yet rewarding album.

Though they're not nearly as well-known as their Utah-based brethren, the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir gives those Mormons a run for their money with their first holiday-themed recording. This is a powerfully orchestrated set of new and traditional Christmas tunes, with the choir's impeccably arranged, harmonized vocals backed by a full orchestra. The end result is an at times moving, inspirational Christmas album that will probably appeal most strongly to the devoutly religious. ~ Bret Love

The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir is the sort of remarkable organization that often forms the basis for inspirational movies. The members are anonymous, untrained, and sincere individuals, members of a small church in inner-city New York--inspired, passionate voices who come together to create a rich, hallowed sound.
