A collection of solo works as performed by members of Hawkwind. With 13 never-released-before songs, FAMILY TREE continues in the Hawkind Friends and Relations vein. This unique collection includes full-color liner notes and unites the Paradogs, The Little Big Men, Ron Tree, Liz Gizzard, and Dave Brock. Family Tree is a compilation album credited to Hawkwind that actually gathers tracks from various spinoffs and artists related to the band. Leader Dave Brock occupies a third of the album, and Jerry Richards and Alf Hardy's Paradogs contribute three tracks, two of which ("Nile" and "Noctis Labyrinthus") also appeared on their CD Paradogs. Other performers include the Little Big Men (Richard Chadwick and Steve Bemand), Ron Tree, and Liz Gizzard. The music ranges from cheap techno-space rock to total oddities (e.g., Ron Tree and Vital Chi's "Tuff on de Street" is a short experimental spoken word piece). The quality is uneven; the pumped-up dance track by the Little Big Men falls off the mark, but pieces by the Paradogs and Brock are worth a listen. "Kallocain" is the second album from Paatos. The album was mixed by Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree). The Swedish band entitles their music "melancolic post rock" with influences from Björk, Can, King Crimson or Portishead. When you're a fledgling rock band and you get invited to contribute the live accompaniment to a screening of the classic silent horror film Nosferatu, what exactly should you infer from that? In this case, it probably wasn't meant as a reflection of the band's instrumental sound (somewhat dark and sometimes eerie, but hardly evil) or its vocal style (Petronella Nettermalm sounds enough like Björk to drive thoughts of vampirism far from all but the most twisted minds), but maybe as an acknowledgment of its ability to create lush soundscapes that can be put to a variety of uses.
