| | Tullycraft Old Traditions, New Standards CD Tullycraft Discography of CDs
Old Traditions, New Standards is probably Crayon and Tullycraft leader Sean Tollefson's best album. All 12 songs are charm-packed, hook-heavy, twee pop creations. The players are energetic, Tollefson's vocals are confident, and the songwriting presents no misfires. Pat Maley's clean, crisp production gives each song exactly the right spark and feel. With subject matter encompassing superheroes, scads of other indie bands, visits to the seashore, Dollywood, and sweetness, it's safe to say that the cuteness factor of the album is off the charts. That doesn't mean the songs don't rock out. Jangling shambolic guitars, smart arrangements, and an infectious sense of fun mark the album for twee classic status. Highlights include the tale of hang-ups and problems for "Superboy and Supergirl," the tale of young "Josie" who wants to be in a legitimate punk rock band, and "Pop Songs Your Boyfriend's Too Stupid to Know About." The latter song is about as fun as a song can be, as Tollefson tells a girl that he and she share a love for Neutral Milk Hotel and Halo Benders and that her new boyfriend can stick to Green Day and the Breeders. The song is a little valentine to indie bands and fans in the know. Tullycraft's playing is so good throughout the album that they even suggest the the Velvet Underground on "Dollywood." Delightfully fun and never overstepping its welcome, Old Traditions, New Standards is one of the best twee punk-pop albums of its time. ~ Tim DiGravina

Option (11-12/97, p.134) - "...exists in a pop underground where Talulah Gosh and the Pastels are gods, and Heavenly and Cub are their messengers....Tollefson writes songs that make you want to jump up and down with a big goofy grin, but he mercifully avoids being cute..." Old Traditions, New Standards CD music
$12.19 It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which isn't necessarily such a bad thing: the austerity is genuine, not affected, and the cerebral nature of the album is fascinating, albeit mildly so, as this is as sleepy as it is ...

$12.95 On Hard Time for Dreamers, Miami's See Venus debuts their light and airy indie pop sound. From the elegant opener "Trust" to the frolic of the closer "Shine Like Stars," the band shows a commitment to style and substance throughout. Singer Rocky Ordonez showcases her soft vocal approach, which effortlessly glides through the disc, serving as the band's secret weapon. They pick up the pace on "I'll Bet You Know," though ...

| | No-Man Dry Cleaning Ray CD (2000)
Old Traditions, New Standards CD music
$15.29 An album-length semi-catchall of outtakes and remixes of Wild Opera tracks, Dry Cleaning Ray delivers value for money due to its classification as an EP, but the worth is more than simply financial. The title track itself is a new mix of the Wild Opera cut, its at once moody and inspirational feeling a fine demonstration of the Bowness/Wilson partnership, helped along further by the intriguing keyboard part Wilson adds to the proceedings. "Diet Mothers" is a more radical reconstruction, Wilson taking "Pretty Genius" and revamping it into a slow, slinky trip-hop crawl, Bowness' keening vocal deep in the mix behind dub echo guitars and a wailing melodica. The other remix of note comes from an unexpected source -- Bryn ...

His output with Boo! colleagues Ampie Omo and Princess Leonie had already established him as a leading light in SA's adult pop and rock market. Such was the achievement of that band that despite a certain amount of skepticism over anything that might have come ...
