Tindall, Kal David (guitar); Jack Viertel (steel guitar); Gene Stashuk (cello); Paul Butterfield (harmonica); John Payne (clarinet, soprano & tenor saxophones); Marty Grebb (alto & tenor saxophones); Terry Eaton (tenor saxophone); Peter Eckland (cornet); Amos Garrett (trombone); Mark Jordan, Eric Kaz (piano, vibraphone); Merl Saunders, Lou Terriciano (piano); Dave Holland (acoustic bass); Dennis Whitted, Chris Parker (drums); Wells Kelly (drums, conga, cowbell, background vocals); John Hall, Jackie Lomax, Tim Moore (background vocals). Recorded at Bearsville Recording Studio, Bearsville, New York in June 1972. Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna. Digitally remastered by Teresa Caffin. Bonnie Raitt may have switched producers for her second album Give It Up, hiring Michael Cuscuna, but she hasn't switched her style, sticking with the thoroughly engaging blend of folk, blues, R&B, and Californian soft rock. If anything, she's strengthened her formula here, making the divisions between the genres nearly indistinguishable. Take the title track, for instance. It opens with a bluesy acoustic guitar before kicking into a New Orleans brass band about halfway through -- and the great thing about it is that Raitt makes the switch sound natural, even inevitable, never forced. And that's just the tip of the iceberg here, since Give It Up is filled with great songs, delivered in familiar, yet always surprising, ways by Raitt and her skilled band. For those that want to pigeonhole her as a white blues singer, she delivers the lovely "Nothing Seems to Matter," a gentle mid-tempo number that's as mellow as Linda Ronstadt and far more seductive. That's the key to Give It Up: Yes, Raitt can be earthy and sexy, but she balances it with an inviting sensuality that makes the record glow. It's all delivered in a fantastic set of originals and covers performed so naturally it's hard to tell them apart and roots music so thoroughly fused that it all sounds original, even when it's possible to spot the individual elements or influences. Raitt would go on to greater chart successes, but she not only had trouble topping this record, generations of singers, from Sheryl Crow to Shelby Lynne, have used this as a touchstone. One of the great Southern California records. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine GIVE IT UP is the high point in Bonnie Raitt's early career. On it she brings together her R&B, folk, and straight blues influences with a mellow soft rock approach that would become synonymous with the California FM sound, yet none of these elements dominate--Raitt mixes the sounds perfectly. The result is an accessible, sensual music that never relies on cliché for effect, a sound that laid the foundation for her future commercial success. Raitt contributes a handful of fine originals here, including the snappy, bluesy "Give It Up or Let Me Go," and the beautiful "Nothing Seems to Matter." Yet her excellent renditions of cover tunes like Jackson Browne's "Under a Falling Sky" and Chris Smithers's "Love Me Like a Man" prove she is as powerful an interpreter as she is as a songwriter. (Raitt's next two albums--TAKIN' MY TIME and STREETLIGHTS--would be all covers). Most impressive is the precise, easy feel of her backing band (which includes saxophonist John Payne and harmonica player Paul Butterfield) and Raitt's blazing slide and smooth, nuanced vocals that never sound contrived or forced. The flawless ease of her performances is what, ultimately, makes GIVE IT UP authentic, endlessly listenable, and one of the era's classic blues-rock albums.
Rolling Stone (10/26/72, p.60) - "...Bonnie comes out on top of the whole thing, her precise, erotic, thoroughly disciplined voice providing a perfect center for this gutsy enterprise...Bonnie Raitt can sing anything right..." Bonnie Raitt Give It Up Songs Give It Up Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Just gets better..... Bonnie's second set for warner bros
records is considered by many to be
one of her two best records, its full
of energy and musical craftsmanship,
great songs and that voice & slide.
Only 22 at the time she toured with
these great songs, she made herself
thousands of new fans, many, musicians she would later work with, we who fell under this slide wonders spell, we couldn't
get enough of this southern california/northeastern transplant
who was the real deal with years ahead
of her. Great New Orleans vipes going
on, just coming into her own in the
early 70's. Blues, Rock, Pop, Folk, Jazz, Calipso, Country all played into
her sound. She chose to go all over
the place with her music and that kept
her from mass popularity but it finally
caught up with her in the late 80's.

| | Mattoid Eternifinity CD (2005)
Give It Up
$6.19 ETERNIFINITY! The odds and ends follow up to the undergound hit album, "HELLO"!!! This ep contains two outtakes from the debut album (Joy, Tinkli Vinkli) as well as a groovy return to HELLO's melancholic pop masterpiece, "Happiness". Extra production finds its way onto this 2nd outing, with William Tyler (Lambchop, Silverjews) adding lead guitar and Loney Hutchins (Bobby Bare Jr, Wrong Angles) adding bass and drum duties. A must have for fans of The Mattoid's sharp debut. popmatters.com review: "The Mattoid. With a name like that you might expect a former WWF Intercontinental Champion, perhaps someone who had a longstanding feud with the Junkyard Dog in the early '80s. That's not quite it, although the intercontinental tag fits. ...
| | Odel Mind & Body Sold CD (2005)
Give It Up
$18.99 Lynden "Odel" Johnson is the drummer for both the Fully Fullwood Band and Messenjah; stepping out for the first time as a solo artist with Mind & Body Sold, he shows himself to be an impressive talent as a singer and songwriter as well as behind the drums. He seems to be taking quite a few cues from South African reggae superstar Lucky Dube -- from the first sung phrase on "Fire in the Hole," Dube's influence is clear, and it only becomes clearer when the lush female backing vocalists chime in on "Lazarus" and "Neva Lonely." But Johnson has ideas of his own, which he expresses with stylistic forays into funk (on the impressive title track) and a sort of Cuban-calypso fusion (on the very fine "Mantos Santos"). He also comes up with a fairly interesting rewrite of Bob Marley's "Crazy Baldheads," ...
| | Amos Lee Supply & Demand CD (2006) (Import)
Give It Up
$32.85 SUPPLY AND DEMAND, the sophomore release from singer-songwriter Amos Lee, is smart, relaxed, introspective, and earnest, much like his self-titled debut. Lee's associations with Nora Jones extend into the musical realm, as both mine a laid-back, rootsy sound based on acoustic guitars, swelling keys, and simple grooves, accented by personal, carefully crafted lyrics. Lee's combination of folk, pop, and soul harks back to the early 1970s--the definitive era of singer-songwriters--yet there is enough heartfelt sincerity here to save things from a mere retro exercise. With its sharply detailed songcraft and Lee's smooth, soulful singing, SUPPLY AND DEMAND is another notch in this up-and-coming artist's belt. On the title track to his sophomore effort, Supply and Demand, singer/songwriter Amos Lee sings, "Baby I need a plan to help me understand, that life ain't only supply and demand." If the supply and demand Lee is referring to is money, success, and power -- and it clearly is -- then the stuff he truly values here is the currency of freedom, love, and sympathy for your fellow man. It's just such yin-yang subject matter that has driven folksingers to set struggle ...
