This 20-track anthology by speed metal band Raven includes "Don't Need Your Money," "Hard Ride," and "UBX."

Raven was best when they had no idea what they were doing. The first several years of the band's existence helped kick-start the NWOBHM movement, gave a neophytic Metallica a bigger band to hit the road with on the infamous Kill 'Em All for One tour, helped put a fledgling Neat label on the map, and became one of the first underground acts to sign to a major. Unfortunately, the latter accomplishment is not fondly remembered as a victorious moment, since hindsight shows that this upward mobility was the start of a downward cycle as the group lost its core fan base by going in a more commercial direction. In that respect, All Systems Go! is a bit of revisionist history, and being subtitled "The Neat Anthology," it makes no bones about it, as all 20 tracks date from the first three marvelous LPs that Raven -- full of youthful energy and a swagger confident in world domination, even if you could tell they had no idea how they would go about attaining it -- unleashed upon an unsuspecting world. Although this genuflection has honest liner notes from noted European metal journalist Malcolm Dome, it lacks the latter material that had dozens upon dozens of denim-clad denizens screaming "sell out!" and offers nothing new to old fans, but it's a great primer for any young'uns who might wonder what Lars Ulrich saw in the band, and should be treated as such, like a photo album best for those who can only remember the pictures by looking at them because they weren't there. ~ Brian O'Neill

First complete overview of the godfathers of speed metal. Includes many rare tracks, rare photos, sleevenotes by Metal Hammer's Malcolm Dome & a complete discography.

Recorded between 1980 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Malcolm Dome.

Raven: John Gallagher (vocals, bass); Mark Gallagher (guitar); Rob "Wacko" Hunter (drums).

Matthew Fisher/Strange Days
Matthew Fisher/Strange Days CD  (1996) (Import) United Kingdom

All Systems Go! The Neat Anthology music CDs
CD $19.05
After Matthew Fisher's three-year stint as Procol Harum's keyboard player, which includes his work on A Whiter Shade of Pale, he went on to produce Robin Trower's first three solo albums before he released his own in 1973. Although this album, Journey's End, and his next one, entitled I'll Be There, failed to bring Fisher any substantial acclaim, 1980's self-titled release sparked some promise, thanks to some renowned help and sharper songwriting. Packaged together on one disc, both Matthew Fisher and 1981's Strange Days reveal that Fisher's talents as a keyboard player stretch far beyond that of Procol Harum's realm, while demonstrating his ability to write as well. Matthew Fisher is the more solid sounding of the two, employing Rod Argent on background vocals and session man Tim Renwick on guitar, who has played with Ace and David Bowie, among countless others. This album focuses more attention on Fisher's Hammond organ prowess than Strange Days, while the songs are engulfed in a sturdier rock (and soft rock) habitat as well. Fisher's playing isn't bewildering or rambunctious, but his keyboard does elevate his singing, giving songs such as "Back in Your Arms Again" and "Just How Blind" some added ...

Detective wasn't without its detractors who dismissed the short-lived band as a poor man's Led Zeppelin. But Detective had more to offer than that. To be sure, Detective was heavily influenced by Zeppelin, but it wasn't a knee-jerk Zeppelin ...
No Es Lo Mismo
Alejandro Sanz No Es Lo Mismo CD  (2003) (Import) Argentina

All Systems Go! The Neat Anthology music CDs
CD $24.95
NO ES LO MISMO won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album. This 2003 outing from Sanz garnered the singer/songwriter/producer a slew of Latin Grammy awards, including Record of the Year. This special edition features a whole bunch of extra goodies, including a DVD with videos for four tunes including "No Es Lo Mismo" and "Regalame La Silla Done Te Espere," as well as an acoustic version of "Eso." Alejandro Sanz, one of Spain's biggest musical stars, expanded his stylistic palette with NO ES LO MISMO. The title ("It's Not the Same") hints that Sanz will be mixing it up here, and that's exactly what he does. In addition to his usual concoction of flamenco-infused Latin pop, Sanz adds rock, hip-hop, bolero, and son, among other styles. Among the love ballads the artist is known for, there are also songs that address social issues, and production from Cuban musician Lulo Perez gives the album a sharp appealing sheen. There's a bigger beat to Alejandro Sanz's seventh studio album, but that beat isn't rock & roll, or Ricky Martin-type disco, either. The title track says it all--"It's Not the Same." And in case there was any mistake, Sanz throws us curveballs such as "Sandy," a title that on another singer's album would probably ...
