This 382 minute feature film drama is a DVD starring Rober t Powell, Olivia Hussey, Laurence Olivier, Ian McShane and Anne Bancroft. Passion, beauty, and brilliant storytelling are all on display in this six-hour-plus epic from Italian director Franco Zeffirelli. Robert Powell is superb in the title role, and with the overwhelming success of this TV movie throughout the world, has perhaps become what Jesus looks like in many people's minds. The story begins with the arrangements of the wedding between Joseph and Mary, and chronicles the nativity, the encounter with John the Baptist (a ferocious Michael York) and everything up to the crucifixion and resurrection. This film is beautifully shot on actual locations, with haunting music by Maurice Jarre and an all-star cast, including Anne Bancroft, Laurence Olivier, Ian Holm, Earnest Borgnine, Peter Ustinov, James Mason, Anthony Quinn, Rod Steiger and Christopher Plummer. Zeffirelli has created a thorough, but never dull or dogmatic, retelling of the story, and the result is a uniquely transcendental film that holds the power to inspire no matter what the viewer's beliefs or background.
This epic chronicle of Christ begins with the arrangements of the wedding between Joseph and Mary, proceeds through Jesus' birth, his encounter with John the Baptist, and all the way to the grueling, transfigurative end. The all-star cast includes Anne Bancroft, Laurence Olivier, Michael York, James Mason, Rod Steiger, and Robert Powell as Jesus. As the beautiful locations, superb performances, and reverent portrayals reveal, Franco Zeffirelli (OTELLO, HAMLET) directed this six-hour-plus television miniseries with palpable passion.
Originally aired on NBC in April 1977.
The film was shot on location in Morocco and Tunisia.
Some Christian groups protested this film, and several sponsors withdrew from the original airing.

Simply the greatest story ever told Wow! Seeing this again after almost 25 years, this biblically accurate account of the Saviour's mission, and His life, death, and ressurection is simply beyond compare in terms of communicating all the aspects of that era and the significance of Christ in our world.
Robert Powell, who played Jesus, was masterful, perhaps the greatest performance I've seen anywhere. All the other characters performed likewise. This is up their with The Godfather and other classics of our time. Submitted by hkgarry (Hong Kong) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Jesus Of Nazareth review
$13.55 In THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, Milos Forman expertly directs the viewer's sympathy toward Larry Flynt (Woody Harrelson in a superb performance): smut peddler, misogynist, and Editor in Chief of the infamous Hustler magazine. Born in the back woods of Appalachia, the young Flynt--in an opening scene that immediately grabs and amuses--is seen selling moonshine as a child to alcoholic hermits. Flash forward to the 1960s, and he's running a go-go club where he meets the wild (and strangely loveable) Althea Leasure (Courtney Love) who becomes his soul mate and wife. Life is ...
