The Caribbean trio the Baha Men get into the mainstream on their fifth release Who Let the Dogs Out, a brash and funky twist of east coast hip-hop and traditional reggae loops. The initial impression of the album thrives on the success of the album's self-titled single. It's amusing with it's abrasive whoomping throughout the song's chorus, and the Baha Men's quirky beatboxing is head-bopping and energetic. However, throughout the rest of the album, the overall party/celebratory tone takes a toll. It's fun and freewheeling, but it needs variety. The spunk exuded in the title track only delivers so much, so the album falls short just a bit. But for a decent hip-hop album, it's keeping up with current styles and norms. ~ MacKenzie Wilson
This album doesn't really fall into any predetermined category, which is part of what makes it interesting. It's a mix of island music (reggae, calypso, etc.), hip-hop beats, R&B production, and a pure pop aesthetic whose prime directive is unpretentious fun. The eight-strong team of producers' everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach spares no expense and knows no boundaries.
Everything from the signature vocal cry of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" ("You all dat") to the Baha Men's canine imitations (the undeniably infectious title track) is pressed into service. The ultimate goal here is to present a pure party album that will appeal to fans of pop, dancehall reggae, hip-hop, and R&B. That aim is unquestionably achieved, with a collection of songs whose hooks will take up permanent residence in your brain, whether you like it or not.

Of all the bands to emerge from the early `90s grunge explosion, Pearl Jam was both the longest-lived and most consistently interesting. After several albums that found the group taking an increasingly experimental direction, the Seattle quintet returned to its straight-ahead hard rock roots with 2006's self-titled effort. In 2009 however, Pearl Jam surprised fans again with an album containing some of the unit's catchiest, poppiest songs ever. According to lead vocalist Eddie Vedder, most of the new material was written prior to recording, which was a significant departure from the group's usual in-studio jamming method of composition. ...

Who Let The Dogs Out
CD $28.89  4.5 stars Top 500
This melancholy 1976 release includes what would be EJ's last Top 10 hit for three years ("Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word") and is loaded with numbers reflecting the ennui and burnout both John and Taupin were experiencing at the time ("Between Seventeen And Twenty," "If There's A God In Heaven [What's He Waiting For?]"). Elsewhere, John and Taupin write songs in tribute to Edith Piaf ("Cage The Songbird") and a depressingly debilitated Elvis Presley ("Idol"). Despite the inclusion of these and other heart-wrenching compositions like "Tonight," John's irrepressible upbeat attitude comes to the fore on tracks such as the Caleb Quaye instrumental "Your Starter For..." and "One Horse Town," a peppy song about life in the rural South. Most gratifying is a collaboration with the Reverend James Cleveland and his Southern California Choir on the funky "Boogie Pilgrim. Mercury. 2004. Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano, harpsichord); Davey Johnstone (guitar, mandolin); Caleb Quaye (guitar); Michael Hurwirz (cello); David Sanborn (saxophone); Barry Rogers, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker (horns); James Newton-Howard (piano, organ, synthesizer); Kenny Pasarrelli (bass); Roger Pope (drums); Ray Cooper (percussion); The Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Choir, Southern California Community Choir, Bruce Johnston, Graham Nash, Curt Becher, Clark Burroughs, Joe Chemay, Jon Joyce, Cindy Bullens, Ron Hicklin, Toni Tennille, David Crosby, Gene Morford (background vocals).
Engineers include: Gus Dudgeon, John Kurtlander, Earl Mankey.
Recorded at Eastern Sound, Toronto, Canada. Includes liner notes by Gus Dudgeon.
All tracks have been digitally remastered by Gus Dudgeon.
The immense creativity that had spurred Elton John to realize no less than 11 studio albums in under seven years was beginning to show signs of inevitable fatigue. The same can be said as well of the artist's unfathomable physical stamina, which had included practically nonstop touring around the globe since the early '70s. Although initially Blue Moves (1976) was summarily dismissed by both critics as well as longtime enthusiasts, the double LP has since gained considerable stature within John's voluminous catalog. While comparisons were inevitable to the landmark two-disc Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973) song cycle, most similarities in musical style and content ...
