With its spare sound, acoustic guitar, and vocal, the debut, self-titled EP from Philadelphia's the Trouble With Sweeney nestles the band in alt-country at the same time that it shifts the genre's landscape. These are not songs ripe with details of the heartland or the South, the sameness of small towns, thankless blue-collar jobs, and heartache, but they are songs ripe with details of the suburbs, the eventual sameness of all big cities, thankless white-collar jobs, and, of course, heartache. It's that perspective and the lyrical turns in which they are expressed that make the EP a notable one. Frontman and songwriter (and Philadelphia Weekly music writer) Joey Sweeney has a knack for imagery. On "The Way We Run Our Town," Sweeney sings, "The way we run our town/We put trees next to the railroad tracks/So the people ridin' by/Don't see the knives sticking out of our backs." The languor in the tale is perfectly supported by the soft, strumming of an acoustic guitar, but it bounces along on the bassline. On "He Had No Idea," the "he" of the story, backed by a country swing rhythm and harmonica, explains his surprise visit to an ex with the metaphor "I decided I was gonna come down here and spring you/Like a brand new 20-dollar bill." The little-known Buffalo Springfield/Neil Young-penned tune "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong" is the record's only cover, and the wistful melody fits in perfectly. Through it all, Sweeney's voice has that weary edge perfect for an album that plays like a short-story collection sung to an alt-country beat. ~ Christina Saraceno

| | Lloyd Cole Live At The BBC, Vol. 1 CD (2007) England
Trouble With Sweeney album
$12.79 Live at the BBC, Vol. 1 gathers all of the BBC radio sessions recorded by Lloyd Cole & the Commotions around the time of their instant classic debut album Rattlesnakes. (Vol. 2, released at the same time, contains the sessions related to second album Easy Pieces and a full 1986 live set recorded at that year's Glastonbury Festival.) Opening with a pre-LP set on Saturday Live -- signed to a major label almost as soon as they were formed, they were never indie enough to rate a Peel Session -- the first three songs are the sound of a band in its tentative stages. Opening with a cover of Television's "Glory" makes their major influences just a bit too clear, and on both "Patience" ...

Trouble With Sweeney album
$7.09 Pairing up with sister labels Le Grand Magistery Records and Oh! Tonito!, the pop aficionados at Marriage Records offered up this 18-track collection of graceful pop in late 2002. Opening with the demo version of the enchanting "This World vs. the Next World" by the U.K.'s Music Lovers, it's followed by Toronto's Snitches, who offer up the feisty "Shocked" from their 1995 disc A Day at the A. Michigan's Pas/Cal is next with the engaging demo version of "The Cigarette Blouse Rebellion." By this point one thing is clear: Metamorphosis is an international affair of romantic, intellectual pop. The exquisite pop continues with the soft string arrangement of the Blood Group's "Borrowed Tune" from their Volunteers album. Scarboro Aquarium Club offers up ...
| | Fred Neil Do You Ever Think Of Me? CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Trouble With Sweeney CD music
$17.95 DO YOU EVER THINK OF ME is a nicely packaged reissue of 1960s folk-rock legend Fred Neil's two albums for Capitol Records, 1966's FRED NEIL and 1967's SESSIONS. FRED NEIL was a more pop-oriented work than Neil's strictly acoustic 1965 debut, with producer Nik Venet adding a fuller, electrified folk-rock sound. It contains his two most famous songs, "The Dolphins" and "Everybody's Talkin'," the latter of which Harry Nilsson turned into a worldwide hit in 1969. The altogether different ...

| | Bradley Walker Highway Of Dreams CD (2006)
Trouble With Sweeney CD music
$15.05 Bradley Walker has been singing country music since his toddlerhood, and throughout his youth he performed in a variety of country and bluegrass bands. His debut as a solo artist finds him joined by a rather awe-inspiring array of guest artists who include Rhonda Vincent, Vince Gill, rising star Alecia Nugent, producer Carl Jackson and many other bluegrass and traditional country luminaries, and performing songs in that sort of mostly-acoustic-and-bluegrassy-but-with-drums style that is becoming increasingly popular. What's significant about this album is not the fact that Walker was born with muscular dystrophy and performs from a wheelchair, but that he sings like a cross between George Jones and Brad Paisley, in a warm, rich baritone voice that alternately nails and caresses the notes he sings. Traditionalism ...

Trouble With Sweeney music CDs
$14.79 In case the title College (no, it's not a remake of the Buster Keaton silent classic from 1927) didn't clue potential filmgoers in that the movie in question is an adolescent gross-out comedy, the movie poster -- and soundtrack album cover -- should: it depicts a T-shirt- and jeans-clad man, his back to the camera, crouched down with his head stuck in a toilet, presumably vomiting. For the music to this film, the filmmakers have assembled a collection of contemporary pop music in various ...
