In offering up a slice of early 2002's pop landscape, NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC! VOLUME 9 casts its net far and wide for a collection that epitomizes the term "strange bedfellows." Although the bubble-gum boom cooled off considerably, this compilation still finds room to include Britney's Prince-flavored "I'm A Slave 4 U" and of course competing cuts by N Sync ("Gone") and Backstreet Boys ("Drowning"). Hip-hop and R&B dominate Volume 9, whether its southern rookie Petey Pablo ("Raise Up"), Roc-A-Fella superstar Ludacris ("Roll Out [My Business]"), or Def Jam stablemates Case and Ja Rule ("Livin' It Up").
Along with homegrown divas like Mary J. Blige ("Family Affair") and Jennifer Lopez ("Ain't It Funny") are Canadian Nelly Furtado ("Turn Off The Light") and Colombian Shakira ("Whenever, Wherever"). Those craving songs with a somewhat harder edge also get their needs met by sensitive aggro-rockers Incubus ("Wish You Were Here"), funk master Lenny Kravitz ("Dig In"), and rock behemoths Aerosmith ("Just Push Play") and U2 ("Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of").

Now That's What I Call Music! 9 album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, ...

Now That's What I Call Music! 9 songs
$17.95 Terry Black, originally from Vancouver, B.C., became a teen sensation in Canada between 1964 and 1966. He had numerous hit singles released on the Arc Records label, mostly written and produced by the songwriting team of Philip F. Sloan and Steve Barri. In 1965, Arc Records released a collection of Black's singles under the album called "Only 16/Poor Little Fool," named after two of his biggest hits. In 1966, due to a job transfer, the Black family moved to Hollywood, CA. This put Black right in the center of the entertainment world. The movie industry got word of Black's huge success in Canada ...

Now That's What I Call Music! 9 album
$8.99 In 1985, a number of years before Mike Mazzarella started The Rooks, he formed a nice little power pop unit called the Broken Hearts. Along with guitarist Tom Bittel, bassist Jamie Beckett, and drummer Pat Yourell, this spunky quartet recorded Want One? in December/January '84/85 and released it--as was then the fashion--on vinyl. Reissued on Paisley Pop in 2003 on CD, the original nine songs have been augmented with 11 extras. Perhaps the first thing that calls attention to itself on Want One? is how ...
