| | Toots & The Maytals 54-46 Was My Number: Anthology 1964-2000 CD Toots & The Maytals Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Recorded between 1965 & 1974. Includes liner notes by Laurence Cane-Honeysett.
There are literally dozens of Toots and the Maytals anthologies, ranging from the very good to the very, very bad. The two-disc 54-46 WAS MY NUMBER: ANTHOLOGY 1964-2000, part of Trojan Records' new distribution deal with the British reissue label Sanctuary, is a superior overview of the sweet-voiced singer's musical legacy. Although Bob Marley is far better known to international audiences, Toots Hibbert is at least as important a figure in reggae history (his single "Do the Reggay," in fact, gave the genre its name).
Hibbert spent so many years on so many different labels that it was difficult to get a handle on his career before the appearance of 54-46.
This 48-track compilation, arranged in chronological order, gathers not only obvious high points like the immortal "Pressure Drop" and the title track (here in both the original and the better-known '70s remake), but also a wide variety of worthy rarities, some of which haven't been widely available since their original appearance on Jamaican singles. This is, hands-down, the best and most comprehensive retrospective of Toots Hibbert's exceptional career.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

| | Johnny Cash American IV: The Man Comes Around CD (2002)
54-46 Was My Number: Anthology 1964-2000 music CDs
$11.99 "Give My Love To Rose" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
Includes a bonus DVD featuring a music video for the song "Hurt".
When the first volume of Johnny Cash's AMERICAN series appeared in 1994, it would have been difficult to predict its critical and commercial success, much less the fact that an illness-beset Cash would be turning out a powerful fourth installment of the series eight years later. Like its three predecessors, AMERICAN IV is a home-recorded, bare-bones Rick Rubin production wherein Cash tackles old classics by other writers as well as more contemporary tunes by artists from the rock world, with a smattering of his own new compositions thrown in. It's also arguably the strongest since the first volume.
Now that the novelty of hearing the Man in Black tackle tunes by the likes of Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus") and Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt") has worn off, we can get past the gimmickry ...

54-46 Was My Number: Anthology 1964-2000 album
$15.09 Today the most recognition the Animals get is "House of the Rising Sun" being played on oldies radio, but in the mid-1960s they were a powerful part of the British Invasion, often reckoned on a par with the Beatles, the Stones, and the Who. Like those bands, the Animals had strong roots in blues and R&B, but, in their original incarnation, ...

54-46 Was My Number: Anthology 1964-2000 CD music
$34.09 Although most people think of bluegrass as an old form of Southern mountain music, it's actually a fairly recent creation, gaining its shape at the same time as rock & roll in the late '40s and early '50s and making use of the same technology (portable microphones and electric amplification) as rock & roll did to catch on and spread. The new technology allowed individual instruments to step forward out of the earlier massed string band approach and also allowed ...
