Hanging Gardens, the Necks' seventh album, was first released in 1999 on their own label, Fish of Milk, and reissued by ReR Megacorp two years later for the European and American markets. There is a reason why the British avant-rock label chose this particular title: it is a lot more energy-driven. As usual, the CD is comprised of a single hour-long piece performed nonstop. Drummer Tony Buck lays down a fast-paced, highly danceable groove backed by Lloyd Swanton's insistent acoustic bassline. Both musicians add ornaments to the basic motif, but all in all nothing really changes over the course of 60 minutes. Chris Abrahams follows a 16-bar piano motif, typically simple and augmented by stabs of electric piano (through an echo box) and occasional organ sweeps early in the piece. Unlike Aether or even Piano Bass Drums, Hanging Gardens starts almost abruptly, with every element put into place quickly, reaches its cruising speed after seven minutes, and doesn't let go until five minutes before the end when things simmer down, leaving only a few notes on the Fender Rhodes. The music is as hypnotic as usual with the Necks, but it takes the form of an acoustic space/trance drive, something like Medeski, Martin & Wood meeting the Ozric Tentacles. It doesn't have the spellbinding power of Aether, but it makes a better introduction to the band. ~ François Couture
Recorded between September 1996 and January 1999.
The Necks: Chris Abrahams (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Lloyd Swanton (acoustic & electric basses); Tony Buck (drums, percussion, samples).
Alternative Press (5/02, p.94) - 8 out of 10 - "...Like a jazzy combination of Eno's DISCRETE MUSIC and Terry Riley's IN C, this long, mesmerizing 60-minute piece seems to move at several different speeds at once." Mojo (Publisher) (April 2002, p.97) - "...[An] extraordinary improvised 60-minute piece....over a delicate, insistent hi-hat pattern, fragments of melody weave in and out of the mix....you'll either be utterly mexmerised or put a foot through a speaker..." Hanging Gardens
$11.89 "We are trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death." Few albums begin with such promise and foreboding, but this first full-length from Canadian genius collective Godspeed You Black Emperor! succeeds in the first few moments. F# A# (Infinity) contains three compositions that run the gamut from grotesque to sublime. The term "composition" seems an appropriate one to use as this band does not write songs. Each piece is at least 14 minutes in length, consisting of three to four sections. The band, a nine-member unit consisting of guitar, drums, bass, strings, keyboard, marimbas, and woodwinds, intersperses voice-over narrative with sprawling instrumental melodies. The arrangements move slowly, building from hushed silence to cathartic crescendo and ...

In the '80s, former Richard Hell guitarist Robert Quine hooked up with Lou Reed for a critically acclaimed batch of albums regarded by many as the Velvet Underground visionary's finest solo works. However, this was not the first time Quine and Reed's paths had crossed. In 1969, young Velvets fan Quine surreptitiously recorded a string of Velvet Underground gigs during ...

The reviewers tell us what to buy, but the public actually part with the cash. Surely 26 million people cannot be wrong, as original Mac guitarist Peter Green's creation became the prime example of AOR long after his departure. The inner strife and turmoil of the band is credited as having helped to make this many-headed beast into such ...

| | Billy Idol Whiplash Smile CD (1986)
Hanging Gardens
$7.99 Although it was ultimately an unsatisfying album, failing to live up to the promise of its fabulous single, "To Be a Lover," Whiplash Smile still burned clean with an immediately recognizable 1980s energy. Like Billy Idol himself, who affected the punk archetype but cut it with a two-dimensional, cartoonish plasticity perfect for the decade, Whiplash Smile expands on the sound of the 1983 breakthrough Rebel Yell while cleverly leaving its key elements unchanged. Idol's inherent Jim Morrison-ness was fleshed out, and Steve Stevens' already atmospheric guitar work was blended even more seamlessly with a percolating pot of shifting styles, new wave dance beats, and synth-heavy production. "Soul Standing By" and "Man for All Seasons certainly rocked -- Stevens' guitar work crackles with inventiveness, even augmented as it is with multiple overdubs. But like most of Whiplash, the songs seemed to exist in a phantom zone akin to the prismatic holding cell of General Zod and his cohorts in Superman II. The plodding "Beyond Belief" and the weird, Marty Robbins-meets-Del Shannon-in-space vibe of "Sweet ...
