Ibiza Magic Chill Out Trick album
$15.98 Number Ones replaces Design of a Decade, released 14 years prior. Excepting the new song "Make Me" (hard neo-disco/funk excellence), each song here was indeed a number one hit on Billboard's various charts, though "Got 'Til It's ...

Ibiza Magic Chill Out Trick album
$11.99 Barry White's ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS contains the original single versions of his classic solo hits, as well as two songs White performed as the lead vocalist of the Love Unlimited Orchestra. All tracks were previously released on the 20th Century Records label.
All tracks digitally remastered by Gary Mayo (Polygram Studios).
It took quite a while for a definitive Barry White compilation to hit the market, but All-Time Greatest Hits -- part of Mercury's Funk Essentials series -- finally filled the bill in 1995. Boasting a full 20 tracks from White's heyday of 1973-1978, more than half of which made the R&B Top Ten, All-Time Greatest Hits is easily the most generous single-disc White collection ...

| | Diana Ross I Love You CD (2007) Import
Ibiza Magic Chill Out Trick album
$34.89 Diana Ross rightly belongs in the pantheon of essential pop artists, and the appearance of 2007's DREAMGIRLS, a film based on the rise of the Supremes, made her legendary star shine all the brighter. Though not as strong as Ross's best work from the past, her 2007 solo album, I LOVE YOU, is a nice, safe collection of romantic standards, ballads, and contemporary covers.
The material ranges from classic pop (Bacharach-David's "The Look of Love," for example) to vintage R&B (the Platters' "Only You") to seemingly odd but still enjoyable choices (Berlin's "You Take My Breath Away" and the Spiral Staircase's "More Today Than Yesterday"). The arrangements are straightforward, and Ross's performances are enjoyable, if a bit timid, but die-hard fans of the great singer will still appreciate her take on these fine, well-known tunes.
In what might be the least inspired album of her career, iconic diva Diana Ross sleepwalks through a mishmash of seemingly randomly chosen love songs, all covers save for one new composition, adding nothing to them and forcing one to wonder just why she bothered. It's been standard music industry practice for years for artists to record (or for their labels to release compilations of) romantic tunes in time for Valentine's Day, and the January 2007 arrival of this set couldn't have been better timed as it also coincided with the release of the film version of Dreamgirls, based on the career of the Supremes. But Ross doesn't seize the moment: she puts little emotion or enthusiasm into her recitations here, and seems to have little familiarity with, or understanding of, the songs she and producers Peter Asher and Steve Tyrell have chosen for the album. Her vocals are largely nondescript and at times barely hint at the qualities that made her such a distinctive force for decades, and the arrangements and production are whitewashed and lacking in originality. The material is all over the place, including songs from the '50s to those of more recent vintage, from the Platters' "Only You" through Berlin's "Take My Breath Away," and from fellow Motown great Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" to the ubiquitous (and, at this point, plain annoying) "You Are So Beautiful." Ross takes Jackie Wilson's "To Be Loved" and bleeds the soul from it, and she drains the magic from the Drifters' classic "This Magic Moment." Harry Nilsson's "Remember" not only opens the album but closes it in a brief reprise version, but Ross seems unsure what to do with it either time. The Beatles' "I Will" might be an excellent cover choice in more sympathetic hands, but Ross sounds uncomfortable with its simplicity and quietness, while her reading of Burt Bacharach-Hal David's sultry masterpiece "The Look of Love" is embarrassingly ...
| | Milton Grand Hotel CD (2008)
Ibiza Magic Chill Out Trick CD music
$15.15 Milton, the NYC singer-songwriter with the distinctive voice and one-name moniker, releases his best work to date, Grand Hotel, the album he and his band recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams, Iris Dement, Greg Brown) and engineer Tom Tucker (Prince, Lucinda Williams, Mavis Staples). Each track a diamond, Grand Hotel includes some of the songs that crowds have come to know and sing along to in sold-out shows at NYC venues like Joe's Pub and The Living Room. Among these are the album's title track, as well as the swinging, radio-ready "Everybody Loves You"and the lilting "Pretty Face." Other highlights include the bluesy "A Whole Lotta Pain"and the reflective "Night Driving."Grand Hotel offers timeless music which hovers in a distinctively NYC intersection of blues, pop, folk-rock and country. "There's a lot of country in the sound of this record" , admits Milton. "My grandmother's brother was a folk singer. He even cut 78's in the 1940's. He used to play old folk songs on guitar at family parties. His son would play banjo and we'd all sing along." Drawing inspiration from a deep well of rural American roots music, Milton explains, "My favorite singers are blues singers and old R&B guys. As a kid, my dad took us to see Doc and Merle Watson. He loved bluegrass." As for how an urbane musician writes such soulful songs, Milton offers, "I never make any rules when I write, I just follow whatever I'm writing to its end. All of my favorite American songwriters drew from all the different root forms we have in this country. I write all of my songs in my head and then find them on a guitar or keyboard in front of my little computer in my tiny Manhattan apartment and I send Garage Band demos to the band to learn."While he has been compared to many of his heroes; Van Morrison, Nick Lowe, The Band. Milton has distinguished himself with a unique voice and a compelling mix of grit and grammar. Milton has been aptly described as a writer's ...
