Epic/Legacy's double-disc set The Ultimate Ted Nugent falls short of its billing for a couple of reasons. First of all, even if the sound is very good, there are no liner notes -- just shots of Ted doing his guitar-face on-stage, plus pictures of his Epic albums. Second, this concentrates just on his Epic recordings, without dipping into the Amboy Dukes, while also ignoring latter-day recordings for other labels, including his manly tribute to the great hunter, "Fred Bear" (if you live in Michigan, where you can't go a day in hunting season without hearing this song, you know this is a crucial omission). So, what do you get? A double-disc collection of Ted the "wildman" at his peak -- which is good for those that just want the prime and the prime only, but it's a bit much for those that just want hits. As far as music goes, it's pretty good, since it does have those basic hits, but it's still a bit much and it could have been produced with a bit more care. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

While the parting of ways between a charismatic lead singer and a popular band is always a dicey proposition (David Lee Roth anyone?), many observers undoubtedly thought that when a depressed, drug-addled, Ozzy Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979, a particularly dark day was at hand. Incredibly, however, Sabbath soldiered on, and Ozzy became a bigger superstar than even he himself could have imagined. Beginning with 1980's classic BLIZZARD OF OZZ and its equally classic single "Crazy Train," the Godfather Of Metal released a string of uniformly excellent albums the equal of anything in heavy music. Needless to say, along the way he consistently made the papers with his outrageous antics, headlined the biggest-grossing concert tour of all time, became a television star, and depending on who's telling the story, either sold his soul to Satan or became an average family man.

While the album's title is deceiving -- all but five of the 18 tracks on this double disc originate from the '90s, and 11 of those are from the same show -- this is an adequate, well-recorded document of both the original and re-formed versions of Foghat running through their established repertoire. It also works as a tribute to Lonesome Dave Peverett, the group's lead singer and primary songwriter, who died of cancer in February 2000, about a year after the most recent recording here. Since the band hit their peak in 1977 with their first live recording (a 1977 version of "I Ain't Got You" is this disc's oldest, tightest, and most succinct performance and might even be an outtake from that album), this can't help but be a retread. Still, the group retains most of their original lineup and their sweat-stained boogie-blues remains energetic enough, even though at over two hours, this is a bit much for all but the most dedicated. Extended versions of "Slow Ride" (at nine and a half minutes), "Chateau Laffite '59 Boogie" (nearly 15 minutes), and "I Just Want to Make Love to You" (which clocks in at a whopping 16-plus ...
