ON SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON, the songs tell the tale of a young prophet who predicts the destruction of his village, and is ignored when he tries to warn the others. Eventually, the man goes mad and commits suicide. Employing synthesizers, Iron Maiden takes a two-fold risk: with the music and by doing a concept album. This formula might have spelled disaster for most bands, but not Iron Maiden. SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON turned out to be one of the band's strongest releases, debuting in the U.K. charts at Number One, and spawning four Top-10 singles ("Can I Play With Madness," "The Evil That Men Do," "The Prophecy," and "Infinite Dreams"). The band's popularity had reached an all-time high around this time, as Maiden headlined the 1988 Monsters of Rock concert at England's Castle Donnington. During the single-day event, Iron Maiden played to a record 100,000 fans, headlining over such big names as Kiss, David Lee Roth, Guns N' Roses, and Megadeth.

In 1988, harsh thrash metal and radio-friendly glam rock were the two chief heavy metal styles. Instead of aligning themselves to either camp, Iron Maiden stuck to their guns and issued a concept album, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Concept albums had spelled disaster for other metal bands in the past, but this proved not to be the case with Maiden, resulting in what many fans consider their last true classic album (and the last with guitarist Adrian Smith, until their late-'90s reunion). Although the songs are all lyrically tied together by the story of a prophet who tries (unsuccessfully) to warn a village of an impending holocaust, they don't have to be listened to in succession to be enjoyed -- one of the main reasons the album worked so well. A total of four singles were issued in the U.K. (all Top Tens) -- "Can I Play With Madness?," "The Evil That Men Do," "The Clairvoyant," and "Infinite Dreams" -- which all prove to be the album's best cuts. But like earlier Maiden albums, this is a complete album -- while "Moonchild," "The Prophecy," "Only the Good Die Young," and the epic title track are not as well-known as the singles, they are just as noteworthy. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son marked the end of a golden era for one of metal's all-time best bands. [On all of Iron Maiden's 1998 reissues on Raw Power a multimedia section is featured on the CD, which includes videos, band biographies, tour date history, and photo galleries.] ~ Greg Prato

3 stars a Maiden fans MUST
The last album of the classic line-up. All players were at their peak and created a perfect album, not only to listen to, but to play as well. I standard on my guitars. The mediocrity who left the depricating comment is a talentless bourgeois brat, best to be ignored.

5 stars The very Peak
On this album, Iron Maiden reached their creative apex. This is by far the most progressive metal album that they ever made, and it became a major influence for bands like Dream Theatre, Symphony X, and a host of other progressive metal bands. The boys were really in top form on this one.

Best Of Black Sabbath
Best Of Black Sabbath CD  (2000)

Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son music CDs

This particular Best of Black Sabbath compilation should have, in big bold letters on the cover, "without Ozzy." These ten tracks are taken from the IRS albums the band recorded in the early '90s. Younger heavy metal fans may get a kick out of tunes like "When Death Calls," "Devil and Daughter," or "Headless Cross" but most die-hard fans would agree this does not represent the best of Black Sabbath. ~ Al Campbell Unless you're a die-hard fan, it's quite difficult to keep track of all the different lineups that have toured and recorded under the name Black Sabbath after Ozzy Osbourne's exit in 1979. The only original member to remain with Sabbath through thick and thin has been guitarist Tony Iommi, who by the early '90s was briefly joined by a rhythm section of session musicians widely known within the British heavy metal community -- drummer Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Rainbow, etc.) and bassist Neil Murray (Whitesnake, Gary Moore, etc.) -- in addition to singer Tony Martin. This version of Sabbath would go on to record a pair of largely ignored albums together, 1990's TYR and 1995's Forbidden, which serve as the basis for the 2001 compilation The Best of Black Sabbath. It's a tough sell to issue a Sabbath "best-of" and not include such metal standards as "Paranoid" or "Iron Man," but ...

Blind Guardian fans have grown accustomed to waiting long periods between the band's studio albums, which these masters of German progressive power metal tend to deliver only every four years or so -- much like World Cups, curiously enough. That was precisely the gap separating 2002's A Night at the Opera, which dismayed some longtime fans with its nearly symphonic, unusually complicated compositions, ...

Julien Wilson Trio-Live CD  (2008) (Import)

Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son CD music

Julien Wilson is one of the most gifted and individual saxophonists in the Australian jazz scene. He is the recipient of the 2008 Jazz Artist of the Year, 2006 Freedman Fellowship and the 1994 National Jazz Award, and has performed and recorded with artists including Mike Nock, Hugh Masekala, Jim Black, Bob Moses, Mark Helias, Kurt Elling Quartet and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. His trio has been invited to perform at many Australian and International Festivals, including The Berlin Jazz Festival, New Zealand International Jazz Festival & Jakarta JAVA Jazz Festival. 'In fact, it was Wilson who provided what may have been the highlight of the Festival when he performed with his Trio in the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The sheer majestic quality of this band’s music is astounding, and, in the vast surroundings of the Cathedral, Wilson’s soaring tenor took on a spiritual quality, reaching all the way back to Coltrane. With an unlikely instrumentation of guitar, accordion and saxophone, the Trio gently added subtle textures to the mix, creating a music that seemed to be full of air and light. Stephen Grant’s accordion floated dreamlike through the space, while Stephen Magnusson’s guitar pierced the veil, intelligent and thoughtful. Solos were few and far between, but when Wilson did set off, his tenor soared to the upper reaches of the Cathedral, filling the church to overflowing. It was a remarkable performance, full of such intimacy and telepathic communion.' Live review of the 2007 Wangaratta Jazz Festival - Rhythms Magazine : December 2007'This is dreamy music for dreamy people. Over the past three years the music of saxophonist Julien Wilson, guitarist Stephen Magnusson and accordionist Stephen Grant has become dreamier as it has evolved. They also play more softly, the role-playing between the instruments is more egalitarian and they are more inclined to luxuriate in rubato passages, as with Magnusson's introductions to Song For Jay and (briefly) Clube da Esquina ...
