Just as punk was mutating into new wave and the '70s were coming to a close, Iron Maiden came onto the British music scene as part of a movement known as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Named for a medieval torture instrument, Iron Maiden was founded by bass player Steve Harris and released their self-titled debut in 1980. Roughly produced by Will Malone, the songs were influenced by the group's fascination with horror films ("Phantom Of The Opera") and the macabre ("Transylvania," "Prowler"). Driven by Harris' driving bass and Paul Di'Anno's raspy vocals, songs such as the moody "Remember Tomorrow" and the more aggressive "Charlotte The Harlot" also featured the melodic interplay of guitarists Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton. "Running Free" was the album's anthem and landed Maiden a slot on Top Of The Pops, where in their refusal to lip-synch, they became the first band to play live on the show since The Who's 1972 appearance.

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Q (8/00, p.127) - Included in Q's "Best Metal Albums Of All Time" - "...Viewed as a punk-metal hybrid....there remains a streetwise edge to this debut that [they] never recaptured..."

5 stars GREATEST BAND EVER!
What can I say that hasn't been said before. This is the debut album from my favorite band of all time. Every song speaks to you of the greatness yet to come. If you have never heard Iron Maiden this is as good a starting point as any of their first 8 full length LP's. UP THE IRONS!!!

4 stars A good album but an awful sound!
This album is quite special. Some tracks are typical Maiden songs ("Transylvania") while others have a different style ("Strange World" with a really beautiful guitar solo). I would say that my favorite songs are "Phantom Of The Opera" (with many fantastic guitar riffs) and of course the title track album. Martin Birch should have produced this great album because it has an awful sound production. I would say Iron Maiden's debut is a must for anyone who likes this band!

Iron Maiden Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son CD  (1988)

Iron Maiden album
CD $18.05  4.4 stars Audio Samples
ON SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON, the songs tell the tale of a young prophet who predicts the destruction of his village, and is ignored when he tries to warn the others. Eventually, the man goes mad and commits suicide. Employing synthesizers, Iron Maiden takes a two-fold risk: with the music and by doing a concept album. This formula might have spelled disaster for most bands, but not Iron Maiden. SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON turned out to be one of the band's strongest releases, debuting in the U.K. charts at Number One, and spawning four Top-10 singles ("Can I Play With Madness," "The Evil That Men Do," "The Prophecy," and "Infinite Dreams"). The band's popularity had reached an all-time high around this time, as Maiden headlined the 1988 Monsters of Rock concert at England's Castle Donnington. During the single-day event, Iron Maiden played to a record 100,000 fans, headlining over such big names as Kiss, David Lee Roth, Guns N' Roses, and Megadeth. In 1988, harsh thrash metal and radio-friendly glam rock were the two chief heavy metal styles. Instead of aligning themselves to either camp, Iron Maiden stuck to their guns and issued a concept album, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Concept albums had spelled disaster for other metal bands in the past, but this proved not to be the case with Maiden, resulting in what many fans consider their last true classic album (and the last with guitarist Adrian Smith, until their late-'90s reunion). Although the songs are all lyrically tied together by the story of a prophet who tries (unsuccessfully) to warn a village of an impending holocaust, they don't have to be listened to in succession to be enjoyed -- one of the main reasons the album worked so well. A total of four singles were issued in the U.K. (all Top Tens) -- "Can I Play With Madness?," "The Evil That Men Do," "The Clairvoyant," and "Infinite Dreams" -- which all prove to be the album's best cuts. But like earlier Maiden albums, this is a complete album -- while

Following its greatest success yet with the concept album SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON, Iron Maiden changed out Adrian Smith for ex-Ian Gillan guitarist Janick Gers on NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING. Rumors swirled that the band was breaking up, especially when Bruce Dickinson issued a solo album, but the band re-congregated for 1990's NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING. The album marked a musical move back to the basics, as Maiden dropped the synth shadings of its previous two albums in exchange for a more guitar-driven sound. Standouts include "Holy Smoke" and "Bring Your Daughter...To the Slaughter," as well as the album-opening "Tailgunner." With their first album of the '90s, Iron Maiden wanted to return back to basics. Comparable to their more straightforward early work, No Prayer for the Dying quickly shot up the charts all over the world, but it was clear that the songwriting wasn't up to snuff when compared to such classics as Killers or Number of the Beast. The album also signaled the debut of new guitarist Janick Gers, best known for his stint in Ian Gillan's solo band and on Bruce Dickinson's solo album, Tattooed Millionaire. Featuring a pair of U.K. hit singles -- the anti-televangelist diatribe "Holy Smoke" and Maiden's lone number one, the controversial "Bring Your Daughter...to the Slaughter" (which was banned by the BBC) -- plus another that should have been issued as a single (the opener, "Tailgunner"), No Prayer as a whole doesn't measure up to the hits. The title track contains an opening too reminiscent of their 1988 single "Infinite Dreams," while other tracks such as "Fates Warning," "Run Silent Run Deep," and "Hooks in You" never catch fire. And even though the epic closer "Mother Russia," "Public Enema Number One," and "Fates Warning" are standouts, they just don't hold up well when compared to past classics. While Maiden retained their solid following elsewhere in the world, No Prayer for the Dying would prove to be their last gold-certified album in the U.

Iron Maiden music CDs
CD $16.89  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Although alternative rock was burning up the charts in 1992, longtime metallist outfit Iron Maiden admirably stuck to its guns with FEAR OF THE DARK. This effort follows in the path of 1990's NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING, as Maiden again sticks to more simple compositions, avoiding the more ambitious songwriting tendencies that marked the group's late-'80s work. The album-opening "Be Quick or Be Dead" recalls the work of such younger speed metal bands as Megadeth, while "From Here to Eternity" is one of Maiden's few forays into tales of sex and sin, a la Guns N' Roses. Unfortunately, Singer Bruce Dickinson quit the band after the ensuing tour (although he and guitarist Adrian Smith would return for a reunion in 1999). While 1992's Fear of the Dark was definitely more of a return to form for Iron Maiden, it was still wasn't quite on par with their exceptional work from the '80s. Easily an improvement over 1990's lackluster No Prayer for the Dying (both musically and sonically), the album debuted on the U.K. charts at number one. The opening "Be Quick or Be Dead" proved Maiden could easily hold their own with younger thrash metal bands, "From Here to Eternity" contained lyrics that seem better fitted for Mötley Crüe, while the expected epic album-closing title track would become a concert staple (all three tracks were released as U.K. singles). While Maiden records of the past would contain an album's worth of first-rate material, Fear of the Dark is again weighed down with too many drab compositions -- "Childhood's End," "Chains of Misery," "Judas Be My Guide," and more. The serene "Wasting Love" proves to be one of Maiden's better ballads of the '90s, while the rockers "Fear Is the Key" and "Afraid to Shoot Strangers" are also standouts. Fear of the Dark would be singer Bruce Dickinson's final studio album with the band (until their late-'90s reunion), as he publicly voiced that he felt the band had run its course. Recorded live at Castle Donnington, England on August 22, 1992. In 1992, Iron Maiden headlined the massive daylong Monsters of Rock heavy metal festival at England's Castle Donington for the second time. Hot on the heels of the band's two-part live album from 1993 (A REAL LIVE ONE and A REAL DEAD ONE), came another live collection, LIVE AT DONINGTON, which contained Maiden's complete performance on August 22, 1992. The performances here are rawer than those on the LIVE ONE/DEAD ONE collections, due to the fact that the group didn't have the luxury of selecting the best performances from several concerts. Though this album was originally issued only as a limited-edition release, when Maiden's complete catalog was reissued in 1998, LIVE AT DONINGTON was included. LIVE AT DONINGTON is an excellent collection, featuring tracks such as "From Here to Eternity," "Tailgunner," "The Clairvoyant," "2 Minutes to Midnight," "Sanctuary," "The Trooper," and other greats. As the title says, Live at Donington was recorded live at England's annual heavy metal festival, Castle Donington, on August 22, 1993. The performances are definitely an improvement over the disappointingly lackluster A Real Live Dead One collection (taken from the same tour), while the track listing is a near-exact duplicate of Dead One. Highlights include such Iron Maiden oldies but goodies as "The Number of the Beast," "Wrathchild," "2 Minutes to Midnight," "Hallowed Be Thy Name," "Iron Maiden," and the then-recent favs "Tailgunner," "Fear of the Dark," "Bring Your Daughter...to the Slaughter," and "Can I Play With Madness?" While fans of Maiden's more obscure material may prefer A Real Live Dead One, Live at Donington proves to be the better of the two on the strength of its far more inspired performances. While 1985's Live After Death remains Iron Maiden's definitive live collection, Live at Donington proved to be a proper follow-up. When longtime vocalist Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden in 1993, many fans feared that the band was finished. But the rest of the band decided to stick it out, finding a replacement in ex-Wolfsbane frontman "Blaze" Bayley. On Maiden's first recording with Bayley, 1995's THE X FACTOR, the band sticks to the same musical direction of its early-'90s work: straightforward, heavy tunes. Bayley's voice couldn't have been more different than that of his predecessor. While Dickinson sang in a higher register (often in an operatic style), Bayley was more of a bassy, low-down belter--just listen to such tracks as "Man on the Edge" and "Lord of the Flies" for proof. Unfortunately, the new lineup didn't have the same staying power as the Dickinson-fronted era, lasting for only one more recording. Suffering from a lack of powerful riffs and tightly written songs, The X Factor is a lackluster latter-day album from Iron Maiden. Although the band doesn't sound particularly bad on the record, they don't sound inspired and there's a noticeable lack of energy to the performances which makes the lack of imagination all the more apparent. There's a few cuts that almost deliver the goods, but it's not enough to raise The X Factor above the merely adequate. 1982's THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST remains one of heavy metal's all-time classics. Although the British quintet was in the midst of enjoying its first taste of global success, original singer Paul Di'Anno abruptly quit in 1981. Though stunned, the young band wisely agreed to soldier on, making ex-Samson singer Bruce Dickinson their new frontman. Nicknamed "The Air Raid Siren," Dickinson's voice was to become one of the band's most prominent signature characteristics. It also didn't hurt that the band had composed some of its best songs ever, such as the haunting title song, and its first U.K. Top-10 single, "Run to the Hills." Other highlights include the sinister "Children of the Damned," the melodic "The Prisoner," and the album-closing epic "Hallowed Be Thy Name." This Limited version features vinyl replica packaging. "El Distorto De Melodica" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. On their follow up to their hit album SPARKLE AND FADE, Everclear continue to ride the wave of Pacific Northwest grunge that brought them their original success. Mixing three-chord rock and straightforward lyrics about the seamier side of Generation X, Everclear achieve an earthiness that the Foo Fighters and other grunge survivors aim for but never quite seem to attain. Leader Art Alexakis sings about people besieged by unfortunate circumstances. When he sings "They have never been poor/They have never had the joy of a welfare christmas" In "I Will Buy You A New Life", he makes his characters' plight real with the understanding and insight of someone who's been there himself. Some of the most effective moments come when he draws on his own experiences; his absentee father and his mother's nervous breakdown are each the subject of powerful songs, and when he sings "You wouldn't even know me since you went away" in "Normal Like You" it is unclear whether he is talking about his father, an old friend, or himself. On the follow up to their hit album SPARKLE AND FADE, Everclear continues to ride the wave of Pacific Northwest (they're from Portland, Oregon) grunge that brought them their original success. Mixing three-chord rock and straightforward lyrics about the seamier side of Generation X (the cultural phenomenon, not the punk band), Everclear achieves an earthiness that the Foo Fighters and other grunge survivors aimed for but never quite seemed to attain. Silver Wheel Of Prayer
Roy Montgomery Silver Wheel Of Prayer CD  (2001)

Iron Maiden songs
CD $11.59
Recorded during the same sessions that produced The Allegory of Healing (and mixed at the same time as that album some months later), Silver Wheel of Prayer isn't so much a companion piece as its own particular, self-contained effort. Both sonically and in terms of how Montgomery named each piece -- "For the Imperiled," "For the Disoriented," etc. -- there's a greater sense on the solely instrumental Silver Wheel of conscious arrangement and organization than on the here and there Allegory. The album itself isn't a constant variation on similar themes, but the first three tracks make it seem so. All have a same near-trademark heavily reverbed, moody, and minimal guitar line at its center, each differing via extra elements or overdubs. "For the Disoriented" has an open-ended organ part leading the way, for instance, while "For the Mortified" similarly adds extra, mysterious drones, guitar, and keyboard washes to the core of the piece. After that, though, each of the four remaining songs is a different composition entirely, perhaps Montgomery's own little joke by setting up expectations and then undercutting them. "For the Dispossessed" is one of Montgomery's best songs, based around a repetitive, slashing guitar figure treated with heavy flange, while equally frazzled guitar and keyboard parts slowly build up around it to create a countermelody, all while sharing the same basic rhythm. It's a bravura effort, demonstrating how even with simpler approaches he can maintain a very distinct musical voice. The album concludes with one of his lengthier explorations, "For a Small Blue Orb." Described in the liner notes as first tried out on an acoustic guitar in a friend's place almost 20 years previously, here it's a lovely blend of, again, a core repeating melody and understated overdubs and extra parts woven together into a new attractive whole. It's further proof that electric guitar was alive and well in 2001. ~ Ned Raggett Recording information: Lyttelton, New Zealand (10/1998). Personnel: Roy Montgomery (guitar, E-bow, Farfisa).
