Recorded between 1958 and 1961. Includes liner notes by Teisco Del Rey.
The king of the power chord is ably represented on this generous two-disc set. SLINKY! covers Link Wray's tenure at Epic Records between 1958 and 1961 and features some of his finest material, including the title track and "Raw-Hide," both of which recall his landmark grungy stomp "Rumble." There is plenty of the guitarist's gnarled tone and aggressive attack on display here, and it's easy to hear why Wray's conception of the instrument became a reference point for punk and metal some years later.
In addition to the expected trademark workouts and rave-ups, there is some Latin-influenced material that mixes mariachi and mambo flavors with a greaser sensibility, as well as some eerie, lounge-ish instrumentals that would not sound out of place on the soundtrack to a David Lynch film. SLINKY! works wonderfully as an introduction to Wray; but with its rare singles, unissued outtakes, alternate versions, and demos it is also indispensable to fans.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

| | Roland Kirk Here Comes The Whistleman CD (1965)
Slinky! The Epic Sessions '58-'61 album
$13.69 Recorded live at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York on March 14, 1965. Originally released on Atlantic (3007). Includes liner notes by Alan Grant.
Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital SErvices, New York, New York).
A major force on the 1960s jazz scene, Roland Kirk was both cutting-edge and accessible--his approach celebrated the blues and gospel traditions that preceded bebop, but also stretched the musical boundaries of the time. Originally recorded for Atlantic Records (before he'd adopted the name Rahsaan), HERE COMES THE WHISTLEMAN is Kirk recorded live in front of a small studio audience in New York City. Accompanied by a quartet that features Lonnie Liston Smith and Jaki Byard (here listed as "Jackie") alternating on piano, Kirk is typically astonishing.
Playing two or three reed instruments at once (with, of course, no overdubbing), Kirk also incorporates wild flute lines over catchy, funky backing (think Horace Silver, Les McCann) that moves the crowd to handclap along. For the Byard original "Aluminum Baby" (featuring a brightly lyrical solo by the composer), Kirk switches between pretty and jagged playing on the manzello (a member of the saxophone family). Throughout, Kirk infuses his heartfelt, passionate delivery with an irreverent, slightly wacky sense of humor, as if he realized there is no law prohibiting edgy music from also being great fun.
The 2004 version of Here Comes the Whistleman is the third one released in the United States in the 21st century. As soon as one license expires, someone else comes along to reissue it, Water in this case. As for the reissue itself, only the package is different. It's an exact replica of the LP in a jewel case and the graphics are higher quality than have ever existed on CD before. Here Comes the Whistleman showcases pre-Rahsaan Roland Kirk in 1965 with a fine band, live in front of a host of invited ...
