Steve Davis, the Criss Cross house trombonist and a member of One for All, is joined by a couple bandmates and two other label regulars for a session mostly devoted to standards. The setting sets Davis' deep debt to the work of J.J. Johnson in sharp relief. The trombonist develops his solos with smooth, measured phrases that emphasize eighth-note lines mostly in the middle register of the horn. On tunes such as "Who Can I Turn To," his work also bears evidence of early Miles Davis (not surprising given the close relationship between the trumpet legend and J.J. Johnson in the late '40s when each was coming to grips with bebop). What Davis lacks that his namesake had was a dramatic way with the melody. This is most evident on the trombonist's matter-of-fact reading of "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square." Pianist David Hazeltine's eloquent, bop-based impressionism provides a fine foil for the leader's horn. The two tracks with Mike DiRubbo are more in the Coltrane modal mode and, though well played, seem out of place in the session. ~ David Dupont
Within the small circle of modern jazz trombonists, few would argue that Steve Davis stands apart from the crowd, not only as a singular instumental voice but also as a gifted composer. With Systems Blue, his fifth Criss Cross album to date, Davis explor

Systems Blue album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ...

| | David Hazeltine Classic Trio Meets Eric Alexander CD (2002)
Systems Blue songs
$13.79 Pianist David Hazeltine and tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander create sparks when working together, and the presence of bassist Peter Washington and drummer Louis Hayes makes their chemistry even better on this 2001 studio session. Hazeltine's hard bop opener, "On the Boulevard," has the kind of attractive groove one would expect in a classic Blue Note date from the early '60s. The leader also wrote the catchy "Jessica's Night"; the saxophonist penned the swirling dynamo "Haye's Phase." Alexander softens his hard-blowing tone to caress a brisk treatment of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "O Grande Amor," while a loping interpretation of Stevie Wonder's ballad "Knocks Me off My Feet" and a lush arrangement of Jimmy Webb's "Didn't We" demonstrate how well they handle modern pop ...
| | David Hazeltine Manhattan Autumn CD (2003)
Systems Blue album
$13.75 Pianist David Hazeltine joins forces once again with tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander for an outstanding session. With bassist Peter Washington and drummer Joe Farnsworth supplying the base of a solid rhythm section, Hazeltine delves into several pop songs from the 1950s and 1960s, giving them complete makeovers. Henry Mancini's slow waltz "Moon River" incorporates stop-time measures initially before settling into a driving hard bop mode. Burt Bacharach's often tediously played ballad "The Look of Love" is still played at a slow tempo, but the pianist adds an ominous sound to sections of his trio arrangement. The briskly paced scoring of Jimmy Van Heusen's
"Nancy (With the Laughing Face)" features a driving piano reminiscent of McCoy Tyner's style, as well as adding a tasty bass solo by Washington. The originals on the session are every bit as potent. The leader's "A Walk in the Park" is a demanding piece full of twists and turns, which the quartet navigates with ease. His "Blues on the 7" showcases Alexander's powerful playing, while the tenor saxophonist's vigorous blues "On the Marc" is every ...
