Though their huge fanbase got its start in the genteel environs of New England, the neo-hippie sound of Phish is by no means limited to being an east coast phenomenon, as witnessed by the rabid crowd that can be heard eating up every moment of this uber-jam-band's lengthy 1994 Ohio concert. While the band amply displays its unparalleled ability to make the most of vamping over a groove on everything from the 2001 theme to fusion/funk fest that is "Weekapaug Groove," Phish's more songful tendencies never fail to come to the fore either. Sure, this set finds them in the mood to extemporize around the edges of even their most carefully constructed compositions (hell, when weren't they?), but make no mistake, these guys take their songwriting just as seriously as their jamming, as those lucky Ohioans found out on this charmed musical evening.

Live Phish, Vol. 10
$23.05 Throughout the '90s, Phish built up its reputation as the ultimate jam band, an outfit fit to take up the Grateful Dead's you-have-to-be-there ethos of exploration via live performance. Accordingly, even after Phish was put on hold and guitarist Trey Anastasio went off to record with supergroup Oysterhead, the neo-hippie icons saw fit to release a five-volume set of live albums, each sold separately and containing two or three discs worth of material from a given night in Phish's concert history. As with the aforementioned Dead, Phish pulls up to its full height in concert, and so this live series is probably the best way to experience the group's improv-oriented ...

| | Let's Jump: Swingers & Humdingers From Modern Records CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Live Phish, Vol. 10
$16.99 The Modern label was one of the Los Angeles independent companies most important in the transition from the swing jazz of the 1940s to the small-combo R&B of the early '50s and the eventual rock & roll of the mid-'50s. Many single-artist and various-artist Modern compilations, many reissued on Ace, explore its large catalog of music covering this large range. Where Let's Jump! Swingin' Humdingers From Modern Records has an advantage over many other such anthologies is in its somewhat higher quality than the norm and, if only relatively speaking, a sharper focus to this grouping of dance tracks. These 26 songs, all from the late '40s to the mid-'50s (three previously unissued, two of those alternate takes), are the kind of vocal and instrumental workouts ...
