Barbara Rush, Charles Drake, Joe Sawyer, Kathleen Hughes, Richard Carlson, Russell Johnson - Director: Jack Arnold A meteor crashes in the desert near a small Arizona town, and research scientist John Putnam (Richard Carlson) thinks it's a spaceship, but no one will believe him except his loyal girlfriend, Ellen (Barbara Rush). Weird evidence begins to back up his theory however, from the strange behavior of some of the locals, to the slime trails, the ghostly noises in the phone lines, and the apparitions of hideous alien eyes swooping down on passing cars. A meteor crashes in the desert near a small Arizona town, and research scientist John Putnam (Richard Carlson) thinks it's a spaceship, but no one will believe him except his loyal girlfriend, Ellen (Barbara Rush). Weird evidence begins to back up his theory however, from the strange behavior of some of the locals, to the slime trails, the ghostly noises in the phone lines, and the apparitions of hideous alien eyes swooping down on passing cars. Director Jack Arnold (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON) lets the story unfold deliberately, and infuses the desert locale with all the unearthly mystery of an alien landscape, helping to make this one of the best science fiction films of the 1950s. Charles Drake is Matt, the sheriff who first thinks John is a fool with all this flying saucer talk, and who later tries to lead a posse against the aliens when the truth is too blatant to ignore. It's based on a story by Ray Bradbury, with an eerie, theremin score, on which Henry Mancini is an unbilled contributor.

It Came From Outer Space Movie Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) ...but didn't do much. An Arizona town taken over by aliens might sound like the stuff of a promising B-movie, yet even though many classic sci-fi elements are present they don't add up to much in this case as the film is too talky and relatively uneventful; it might be appreciated by viewers who prefer mood to monsters.
The extra features are plentiful but can't compensate for the lack of substance. Submitted by zunod (Devon, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Yes, I'm crazy for giving it 4 stars, but it brought back such fond memories of the early sci-fi movies. It is really well done, for the type of movie it is. The special features help explain much of the background of the film, and Universal Pictures position on sci-fi. The feature is well worth watching. campy! the movie is a classic because of the era in which it was made; the DVD is quite good because of the various commentary available .. helping to "set the scene" of the era. great stuff! Submitted by a reviewer (Dallas, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Relaxation therapy Even as a kid, I found the plot, dialog and alien creature to be lackluster. I just can't get excited about aliens walking around as regular humans (like telephone repairmen)after they have commandeered their bodies (but not their souls). This plot just has never worked for me (with the rare exception being Invasion of the Body Snatchers). On the other hand, I have always enjoyed watching this movie. I think it's because once all of the elements of this movie are homogenized, something preeminently nostalgic is generated. Submitted by brianp (Fremont, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
I'm glad it came from outerspace! This movie stands as one of the all time great sci-fi movies. I remember watching it as a child and loving it as well (not TOO scary). How can you not like a movie that starts out with a "shooting star" full of monsters crash landing in the middle of the desert? The camera viewpoint from the monsters' one big eye is a classic sci-fi shot. Slowly we find that the monsters are really the untrusting, paranoid humans bent on destroying the aliens. Throw in an astronomer (with a great 50's cocktail set house in the desert)who is considered a crack-pot by the towns folk and I'm hooked. Buy this movie. You won't be dissapointed.
