John Ritter, Michael Kidd, Vincent Gardenia - Director: Blake Edwards Zach loves his ex-wife. He loves her so much he's willing to do anything to get her back. Except give up women. Or give up booze. Or go back to work. Blake Edwards's return to the male-in-meltdown territory he explored in 10 and THAT'S LIFE stars John Ritter as unemployed writer Zach, who is not only suffering from writer's block, but his drinking is out of control, as is his obsessive womanizing, and, not surprisingly, his wife wants to end their marriage. To add to his problems, his house has just burned down, and his agent is knocking at death's door. But since this is a Blake Edwards comedy, Zach has enough charm and relative affluence to continue his pursuits, which the director regards with a bemused deatchment. One of his girlfriends sets his piano on fire, and another gets him to wear a glow-in-the-dark condom, allowing him to engage in a condom duel with her jealous, similarly clad rock-star boyfriend. Eventually, Zach turns to fatherly bartender Barney (Vince Gardenia), who should have long ago cut off his bar tab, and psychiatrist Dr. Westford (choreographer Michael Kidd), and both tell him to stop destroying himself through drink. Ritter rings some surprisingly complex changes in the wildly farcical film, and, in the condom battle, participates in one of the funniest moments ever committed to celluloid while suggesting an interesting new subtext. "SKIN DEEP": one of the funniest and best from Blake Edwards I originally saw "Skin Deep" when it first appeared in the movie theatres back in 1989. I had even purchased it on laserdisc, but since that was in Full Screen (Pan-and-Scan), I am considering purchasing the DVD, which is in the letterbox/widescreen format (2.35:1 aspect ratio), which I prefer, and with Spanish subtitles (if prefer). I would place this movie along with Blake Edwards' other excellent movie "10", which is in that same genre. The other reason why I love this film is the character of Zack, which reminds me of ME! I have the same type of personality and same traits! EXCEPT I do not drink like he does! I only drink to socialize. I won't go into explaining the movie since you can read the synopsis, but if you want to laugh, and you loved "10" and if you like Blake Edwards' films, you won't be disappointed, and you will most likely love this movie also! John Ritter is one of our best comic actors (which the character of Jack Tripper is extremely close, about 99 recent, to me! But ... Zack = Jack ! ... hmmmm! Coincidence? Jack Tripper comes close to the character of Zack in a way!). If you don't think it is excellent, you have to say it is good. This is better than those "cookie cutter" crap-type movies being processed in the last ten years! How could you go wrong with a Blake Edwards movie? Rent, or better yet, BUY THIS! And watch and ENJOY! If you don't laugh, especially during the glow-in-the-dark condom scene, then you are either a hard-right religious person or have no funny bone or have no sense of humor (like my first wife)! Thank you. -Paul Submitted by latinogringo941 (New York, New York, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Blake Edwards at his very best A truely classic comedy with a lot of class and great story line written and directed by Edwards himself. John Ritter is the perfect choice for this role and his performance as an womanising alcoholic on the verge of a break down is flawless. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. $18.39 BAD BOYS: Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) is a happily married family man. Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) is a smooth-talking bachelor. Both are cops in the narcotics division of the Miami police department. When $100 million dollars worth of seized heroin is stolen from their police station, the mismatched duo are forced to switch identities to placate the only witness (Tea Leoni) who can lead them to the drug lord responsible and save their jobs before the FBI closes them down. This explosion-heavy, chase-filled, gun-smoking action comedy is directed by Michael Bay (ARMAGEDDON, PEARL HARBOR) and features comedic odd-couple-style bantering between the aptly paired Smith and Lawrence.
