Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot coined the term "digital hardcore" and later used it as the name of his record label, an appropriate term for the fusion of hardcore techno with the politicized, anti-fascist ethos and directness of punk's first wave. DELETE YOURSELF (1995), itself a contemporaneous reissue-repackaging of their debut, originally entitled 1995, begins with "Start the Riot"--a straightforward call to arms, commanding the listener to just what the title suggests, over an almost comically unrelenting beat. Most of the album's tracks follow a similar blueprint: recognizable samples ("Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Funky Drummer," and a take on Sham 69's classic "If the Kids are United") are tossed into the pot with the brutal hardcore techno that the members of ATR had weaned themselves on in their native Berlin. Rave tempos combined with crunchy punk guitars and snotty vocal might not look like a happy marriage on paper, but the band makes the mash-up work. ATR wears its political rhetoric shamelessly on its sleeve, but while one could argue that the message is slightly facile, this kind of music was never known for its subtlety.
Never before released in the US! This is the CD that started a revolution, originally released in 1996. An electronic music classic! Includes two live tracks.
Recorded at Empire Studio, Berlin, Germany and Roundhouse Studios, LOndon, England.
Atari Teenage Riot: Alec Empire (vocals, programming); Hanin Elias, Carl Crack (vocals).

Delete Yourself album
$9.65 A forgotten man in the rise of West Coast rap, Tone-Loc was effectively cut off from his hometown scene in Los Angeles by his unexpected pop success. Paced by the singles "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina" -- both co-written by a pre-fame Young MC, and some of the earliest productions by the legendary Dust Brothers -- Loc's debut album, Loc-ed After Dark, became the ...
| | Human League Dare!/Love And Dancing CD (2002) Remastered
Delete Yourself CD music
$11.45 The Human League's epochal breakthrough album, host to the 1981 mega-hit "Don't You Want Me" and the source, therefore, for the myriad sound-alike synth poppers that poured ceaselessly out in its wake, Dare remains one of the keys to truly understanding all that transpired during the early '80s, from the advent of MTV, through to the "British Invasion" of Duran Duran, Culture Club et al. Though one can argue (quite convincingly) that the entire new romantic movement was little more than a semi-vampiric reaction to the excesses of punk, it also represented the first musical movement since glam rock to openly place style on as high a pedestal as substance -- musically and otherwise. That was a lesson it learned wholly from Dare, and it's a testament to the pervasiveness ...

Given America's rapturous response to Velvet Revolver, one can only surmise that hundreds upon thousands of mid-2000s hard rock fans were feeling starved for the late-'80s raucous brand of sleaze. Which makes it all the more baffling to figure out how, if this is the case, other champions of that style of music such as England's Wildhearts and Sweden's Backyard Babies can be continually ignored by these same fans. Velvet Revolver's simple star power is of course the easy answer for this conundrum (Americans' pathetic inability to accept foreign-born great music unless its baby-talked and spoon-fed them by MTV is the difficult one) and all one can do is hope that their major-label-blessed ascension paves the way to success for a few of these other equally deserving -- heck, who are we kidding...far more deserving -- foreign hard rockers. Released in 2005, Tinnitus is one opportunity to rectify this injustice, ...
