Recorded live at Slim's, San Francisco, California on December 31, 2000.
Bringing weirdness to a new level, Mike Patton and Buzz Osborne have formed an unexpected working relationship that has resulted in some of the most interesting metal music to come out in some time. Utilizing the brilliant vocal abilities of the former and the sludge guitar mastery of the latter, the two musicians managed to bring together the members of their Fantomas project and the Melvins for one huge concert involving both bands. To say this is high-concept stuff is to underrate how bizarre this actually is, with one-minute noise experiments sitting next to some of the Melvins' more commercial material with no attempt to reconcile the two. Featuring the savage twin drum attack of former Slayer skin basher Dave Lombardo and Melvins anchor Dale Crover (a dream pairing for many drum enthusiasts), the band is a roaring force of energy that surges and grows more complex with every step. Patton's multiple personalities erupt throughout the album, combining his death metal wail, his clear-throated croon, his Tom Waits-esque grunting, and his obsession with Merzbow noise collages into something resembling a Warner Bros. cartoon from the lowest depth of hell. Although it appears to be his affair, the star of the show is Osborne, who has a commanding roar when he gets on the microphone and continues to play incredible guitar parts from start to finish. The only real complaint is the sound quality, which is rather thin and takes the punch out of the percussion, something that will probably bother fans of the two bands. This is definitely an experience that should be absorbed in a concentrated sitting, and not everyone is going to like it, that is a promise. But to daring metal listeners, there is a lot here to appreciate and the lineup is absolutely stunning. Although the phrase may be used too often, this is truly a supergroup from hell, and the results are as confounding as the pairing. ~ Bradley Torreano

| Millennium Monsterwork 2000 Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) Is it even possible for The Melvins to create bad music? NO. The Melvins have always superceded all criteria of raw and pure artistic expression in their music. I've been consistently blown away by the originality and variety of sound of The Melvins with every album I've Bought. Intense, Progressive, and Mind Altering are how I would describe not only this album but every Melvins album. Submitted by janzen.dunn (Mulletville, KY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

More Madness from Ipecac This is a crazy disc - but what do you expect from Patton et al.?! This is a live recording from a New Year's Eve concert. You'd think that having the Melvins and Fantomas on one stage, banging away, would be a complete muddled mess. But, the sound is very clear and the bands blend together well. The songs are great, bizarre, and wild. Patton runs through all of his crazy "throat exercises", and these guys just rock. Patton and Melvins fans will dig this. First-timers beware - try some studio recorings first. Submitted by a reviewer (Milford, MA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Masterful musicianship at it's best. Great album to hold everyone at bay while waiting for the next studio fantomas album. Brought back memories of seeing them live. Possibly one of the best performances I have ever seen. Submitted by a reviewer (Oak Harbor, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Millennium Monsterwork 2000
$9.69 Admittedly, the Detroit Cobras are simply a cover band. But with their release Life, Love and Leaving on the Long Beach label Sympathy for the Record Industry (the label responsible for the White Stripes' incredible international success), they've been given a bit of credence and an opportunity to showcase their amazing homegrown chops. These 14 songs, all Motown, soul, and good ole rock & roll standards, are the perfect material to bring this Detroit garage rock combo to life. Guitarists Dante Aliano and Maribel Restrepo set the frets afire with seething twangs and fuzz-box ...

For those who've lived under a rock for almost 50 years, this review will mean less than nothing. The rest of us have no doubt encountered -- on some television program, a commercial for a K-Tel oldies collection, or, in rarer cases, songs floating in the background on a film soundtrack ...
