Magnum: Tony Clarkin, Bob Catley, Al Barrow, Mark Stanway. This group is considered to be a progressive rock band with hard-edged influences. Well, that being the case, with that music on the rise, the group could not have picked a better time to return. However, they seem to have more in common here with '80s hair metal than with prog. Yes, the disc does have some prog leanings (a quick listen to the intro to the opening track Cry will affirm that), but it is almost more icing on the cake than real substance. Beyond the obvious '80s leanings, a Deep Purple-ish texture is quite prevalent (witness that same album-opener). All that said, the group has a great understanding of how to create an accessible yet musically interesting song. The album is full of examples of this fact. For fans of progressive rock, though, they probably have too little substance. The only real complaint is that the disc does have a tendency to feel a bit redundant at times. ~ Gary Hill

| Breath Of Life Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) GOOD BUT... Here we have a good album, that`s sure, but some of us are still waiting for another MAGNUM GREAT ALBUM like Vigilante, Goodnight L.A. or On a storytellers night. I think that, after Sleepwalking, the band took a different way to do, and this Breath of life goes on this way. One thing has not change: MAGNUM are a very great band. Recording information: Atlanta, GA (08/01/1927-12/11/1934); Bristol, TN (08/01/1927-12/11/1934); Camden, NJ (08/01/1927-12/11/1934); Charlotte, NC (08/01/1927-12/11/1934); Louisville, KY (08/01/1927-12/11/1934); Memphis, TN (08/01/1927-12/11/1934). Arranger: A.P. Carter. Fans looking for more than ASV/Living Era's Wildwood Flower collection but scared off by Bear Family's massive 12-disc box could comfortably pick up this five-disc budget compilation. At 126 songs, it covers all of their RCA Victor recordings in chronological order, omitting only alternate takes. The remastering isn't necessarily better than other Carter Family issues -- rather than clean up the crackle, the engineers have simply boosted the sound level, and while that does bring out some nuances, the ever-present hiss is louder than usual. That and the scanty liner notes mean that casual fans could probably do perfectly well with Wildwood Flower, but this music is going to be an outstanding addition to any collection, especially at a price this low. ~ Jim Smith A comprehensive budget compilation by the dependable JSP label, the five-disc 1927-1934 fully covers the first seven years of the Carter Family's musical career and features recordings that are the basis of the trio's honored place in the country music firmament. The set starts, appropriately enough, with the Carters' six contributions to Ralph ...

Breath Of Life
$17.09 Back in 1982 and 1983, no one would have used the term "cult following" in connection with power metal. In those days, artists like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were not marginalized -- they were all over MTV and FM rock radio. But in rock's post-'80s, post-Nevermind environment, power metal flies under the radar and attracts what has long since become a cult following. That doesn't mean that power metal disappeared after the '80s; quite a few power metal revival bands have been formed in the '90s and 2000s, but you have to know where to find them. Power metal revival outfits are especially plentiful in Western Europe, home of Masterplan. Aeronautics, the band's second album, is best described as power metal with a strong progressive rock influence -- think Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Ronnie James Dio with an appreciation of Rush, ELP, and Journey. Of course, the power metal orientation isn't surprising ...
