The Frustrators, who include Mike Dirnt of Green Day, upset the all too palatable genre of punk-pop with Achtung Jackass, an enjoyable combination of new wave and bratty, goofball punk. It's no London Calling, but eclectic in its own way. Achtung Jackass skips from mid-tempo punk rock ("Hide and Seek") to Descendents-style jokers ("Frustrators Jingle") and even throws in a little Black Flag for good measure (."25"). But it is a cover of the Cars' "My Best Friend's Girl" that really sets the tone for the record, and the band's ability to earnestly incorporate the diverse catchiness of new wave that makes it so true blue. ~ Charles Spano

It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. I AM. SASHA FIERCE represents another change of pace for Beyoncé. Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. The first disc sports reflective, sometimes moody ballads, while the second, attributed to Beyoncé's brash alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is loaded with propulsive dance-floor fillers. Except for this stylistic divide, I AM. pays only nominal attention to its supposed concept, focusing instead on a set of excellent, radio-ready songs--neatly avoiding the possibility of I AM. becoming some sort of Chris Gaines-style conceptual disaster. Though the second disc, which boasts the synth-drenched lead single, "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," is more immediately gratifying, the impeccably produced ballads of the first disc represent a vast improvement on the often awkward torch songs that weighed down Beyoncé's first solo record.

Billed to Nips 'n' Nipple Erectors, this is an important piece of secondary punk history. It almost fully documents the first band Shane MacGowan recorded with, collecting both sides of the first three singles by the Nipple Erectors/Nips, as well as adding four outtakes: "So Pissed Off" and "Stavordale Rd, N5" (first issued on LP in 1987), and "Venus in Bother Boots" and "Fuss & Bother" (which make their debut on this compilation). Granted, it still doesn't quite add up to 25 minutes, but everything's here save the 1981 single "Happy Song"/"Nobody to Love." It's admirably insouciant but kind of middle-of-the-pack late-'70s U.K. punk, distinguished from some other such sounds of the time by a heavier rockabilly beat and MacGowan's sneering vocals, moving a little sideways into Elvis Costello-like territory on the 1979 single "Gabrielle." As for the two new outtakes, "Venus in Bother Boots" has a slight Ramones feel, while "Fuss & Bother" is, like its title, blather about nothing particularly important. ~ Richie Unterberger
