| | Christmas With Mario Lanza CD (1992)
Verdi: La Traviata / Ceccato, Sills, Et Al
$6.09 Mario Lanza's collection of Christmas songs takes on the Italian-themed sound of his regular work, making for some interesting renditions. Everything is done in his traditional orchestrated style, with emphasis on the tones and sounds, which makes for some beautiful takes. This may not be for everyone, especially those who do not enjoy Lanza's broad croon. But for those looking for Italian-themed performances in their Christmas records, this is an excellent album to buy. ~ Bradley Torreano
Unknown Contributor Role: Jeff Alexander .
Personnel: Mario Lanza (vocals); Harpo Marx (harp); Eudice Shapiro (violin); Constantine Callinicos (piano).
Recording information: Royal Albert Hall, London, England (05/1950-01/1958).
| | Il Divo Ancora CD (2005)
Verdi: La Traviata / Ceccato, Sills, Et Al
$9.35 Knowing how to strike while the iron is hot, the international all-male pop-opera revue Il Divo, assembled by AMERICAN IDOL's Simon Cowell, followed up its 2005 debut (and subsequent Christmas album) with yet another outing in early 2006. Here the dashing vocal quartet--Urs Buhler (Switzerland), Sebastien Izambard (France), Carlos Marin (Spain), and David Miller (U.S.)--stays true to its multi-lingual repertoire, offering up a suitably dramatic Spanish version of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" ("Solo Otra Vez") and an English/French rendition of "I Believe in You" (with Celine Dion), among other numbers. While the arrangements on ANCORA are lush and majestic, they never overshadow the full, passionate voices of the foursome, who have clearly become used to working together as a powerful group.

| | Arvo Part PÄRT: Alina / Spivakov, Bezrodny, Schwalke, Malter CD (2000)
Verdi: La Traviata / Ceccato, Sills, Et Al
$11.35 ALINA offers an unusually pure distillation of Arvo Pärt's mature music, distinguished by what the composer refers to as the 'tintinnabuli style' in which simple scalar melodic phrases are suspended over slowly repeated triadic arpeggios to create a timeless sense of enfolding movement. The disc itself has an enfolding structure--three performances of 'Spiegel im Spiegel' (Mirror in Mirror) are separated by two performances of 'Für Alina'--creating a hall of mirrors to mimic the symmetry of the music, and giving the proceedings as a whole a potent and sustained atmosphere of meditative ritual. As the central performance of 'Spiegel' is of a version for cello, the overall form of the ritual is ABCBA, a perfect arch through which to see the delicate geometry within. This is a notable case of programming in which the whole is made much greater than the sum of its parts.
Personnel: Vladimir Spivakov (violin).

$17.75 | | Baltimore Sym Orch Protecting Veil/Wake Up.. And Die CD (1998)
Verdi: La Traviata / Ceccato, Sills, Et Al
$9.05 John Tavener's 'The Protecting Veil' is deeply rooted in his Russian Orthodox faith (Tavener, an Englishman, converted in 1976). The cello is the voice of the Mother of God; arising with the ethereal opening cello phrases, the work represents different phases of her life in that role: the Annunciation, her Lament at the foot of the Cross, the Resurrection. The first and last movements serve as a frame with which Tavener strives to depict "her cosmic beauty and power over a shattered world."
'Wake up...and Die' is a musical representation of a metaphysical paradox: spiritual awakening and rebirth as death to the worldly; physical death as an awakening to a higher spiritual realm.
In both of these works, as is common in Tavener's works for cello, the solo instrument is given a personification: the voice of Mary in 'The Protecting Veil,' and an individual mind on a spiritual quest in 'Wake up...and Die.' Despite the difference of these works from traditional solo works with orchestra, Yo-Yo Ma takes on these roles with elegance and grace. Ma and conductor David Zinman achieve an appropriate balance between cello and ensemble to reflect Tavener's spiritual conceptions.
This selection is also available in minidisc format.
