Bassist Tom Warrington and his team of guitarist Larry Koonse and drummer Joe LaBarbera are longtime West Coast musicians who co-founded the Jazz Compass label in hopes of bringing more intellectual jazz to the public. If Corduroy Road is any indication, they've succeeded winningly. Fans of ECM-style jazz will find much to enjoy on this mellow and thoughtful album. Koonse's guitar work is reminiscent of both Bill Frisell and Pat Martino, and complements Warrington's melodic and rounded basslines. These guys seem to be really listening to each other, and let their sounds mingle like threads of a warm blanket. Standards such as "You Must Believe in Spring" and "You Stepped Out of a Dream" fit comfortably alongside more progressive Warrington originals such as the elliptical "Tangents" and folky "Corduroy Road." ~ Matt Collar

Purchase Corduroy Road CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ted Brown Free Spirit CD (1989)
Corduroy Road
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes ...
| | Frank Wess Quartet CD (1960)
Corduroy Road
$8.75 Frank Wess has long been one of the most underrated flautists in jazz, but it's his primary instrument on this CD reissue of a Moodsville LP recorded in 1960. With fine accompaniment by piano master Tommy Flanagan, bassist Eddie Jones and drummer Bobby Donaldson, the leader's lyrical chops are evident in Alec Wilder's rarely performed ballad "It's So Peaceful in the Country." The light Latin setting of "Star Eyes" initially spotlights Flanagan's elegant piano, with the rhythm switching gears as Wess works his magic on flute. Flanagan alone introduces the dreamy interpretation ...
| | Terry Gibbs 52ND & Broadway: Songs Of The Bebop Era CD (2004)
Corduroy Road
$14.59 Terry Gibbs has left an indelible mark on the jazz world since 1947. With more than 65 albums to his credit and as the creator of over 300 compositions, the vibist continues to impress his fans with the addition of 52nd & Broadway: Songs of the Bebop Era to his repertoire. Gibbs pays homage to the jazz artists and their timeless standards with the accompaniment of an excellent rhythm section, a string section, and guest soloists James Moody, Nicholas Payton, Sam Most, and Tom Ranier. The 12-track recording opens with Monk's "Round Midnight," which Gibbs treats as a bossa nova. With two superior solos and sublime call and response from Gibbs on vibes and Payton on trumpet, this song is both reflective and buoyant. On Lester Young's blues "Jumping With Symphony Sid," tenor saxophonist master James Moody and Gibbs compliment each other with their bouncing bebop elements and share that personal quality so essential in great jazz. No homage to the Bebop Era would ...

| | Miles Davis Big Fun CDs (1974) Remastered
Corduroy Road
$15.95 In the period following Miles Davis' crossover breakthrough, BITCHES BREW, the trumpeter recorded incessantly, trying out new combinations of ideas and musicians. These progressive young musicians went on to forge a new alloy of music from the ore of funk, electric soul, psychedelic blues and progressive rock, with trace elements of classical and jazz. And Miles was the lightning rod for it all.
BIG FUN gathers up some of the trumpeter's choicest experiments in '70s cool, much of it with a profoundly Indian flavor, and Miles' attraction to raga phrasing mirrors his love of flamenco melodies, particularly on "Lonely Fire" (a late Miles ballad in the tradition of "Nefertiti," "Shhh/Peaceful" and "Sanctuary"). This moody arrangement is distinguished by floating tear drops of tamboura, sitar, tabla and Fender/Rhodes, as Miles sounds taps, shadowed by soprano sax and bass clarinet, before breaking into tempo over the crossrhythms of Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette.
Miles employs twin keyboardists, twin bassists and twin drummers, throughout BIG FUN, and the visceral starts and stops of "Great Expectations" highlight the sort of layered, collective polyphony he was trying to develop, his focused melodies acting as a lyric beacon. "Ife" is Miles in his ON THE CORNER mode, marked by the arrival of funk bassist Michael Henderson, percussionist Mtume and long-time collaborator Al Foster (plus Billy Hart) on drums. But the real highlight is "Go Ahead John," where Davis ...
