Americana album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Lover Come Back to Me." Quite possibly this is the definitive Ted Brown set to acquire; certainly it is highly recommended to lovers of straight-ahead jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Larry Koonse Storybook CD (2006)
Americana album
$12.95 For this set of duets by guitarist Larry Koonse and bassist Darek Oles (with Munyungo Jackson sometimes heard on subtle percussion), the musicians perform originals that are often strongly influenced by Western classical music, particularly the first three numbers. During what is very much an equal musical partnership, Oles has as much solo space as Koonse and sometimes takes the melody statement. The set of ten songs works very well as a suite, gradually picking up steam with the infectious "Island Song" before cooling down again. Most intriguing is "Sengal Trance Dance," a one-chord exploration. The music overall is quiet, inventive, melodic and has subtle intensity just beneath its surface. So although it ...

| | Sun Ra Jazz In Silhouette CD (1958)
Americana music CDs
$13.85 A fascinating recording of Sun Ra and his Arkestra in an early incarnation, 1958's JAZZ IN SILHOUETTE features Ra's complex, adventurous compositions in traditional bop and swing contexts. The opening "Enlightenment" has edgy piano accompaniment from Ra, and a Cuban rhythm outro, but its breezy melody is reminiscent of Duke Ellington circa his Okeh period. "Blues at Midnight" is an up-tempo bop number with outstanding solos from all members of the Arkestra.
Complex themes ("Saturn") and fractured blues ("Horoscope") show qualities integral to the style Ra would develop in the following years. In particular, the drawn-out ensemble explorations of "Ancient Aiethopia"--which are infused with tribal percussion, flute, and chant-like themes--serve as a blueprint for the artist's signature sound. This album is an excellent, accessible introduction to the music of Sun Ra, ideal for those who may be intimidated by Ra's more challenging later work.
Recorded at El Saturn Studio, Chicago, Illinois in 1958. Originally released on El Saturn Records (205). Includes liner notes by Francis Davis.

| | Freddie King Ultimate Collection CD (2001)
Americana songs
$11.99 Recorded between August 26, 1960 and March 31, 1975. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl.
Hip-O's Ultimate Collection is one of the first truly comprehensive overviews of Freddie King's career, starting with his seminal recordings for Federal and running all the way to his final recordings for RSO in the mid-'70s. This is a mixed blessing. On one hand, it's nice to have a disc that tells the whole story, but the shifting production values and performance aesthetics make for slightly uneven listening. Throughout it all, though, King's playing shines and it's clear that even if his material and approach wavered toward the '70s, there was plenty to enjoy within his musicianship. Nevertheless, this is a place to go when you want to dig a little deeper, when you want a map of his entire career; if you want to delve in, head toward Rhino's collection of his Federal/King sides. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
