Johnny Nicholas & The Texas All-Stars: Johnny Nicholas (vocals, guitar);
Mark Kazanoff, Rocky Morales (tenor saxophone); John Mills (baritone saxophone); Al Gomez (trumpet); Riley Osborne (piano, Hammond B-3 organ);
In 1991, after twenty years of the blues scenes of Providence, Detroit-Ann Arbor, Chicago, Texas, the Bay Area and the Cajun country of Louisiana, Johnny Nicholas played on and produceed the late Johnny Shines's last album (with Snooky Pryor). Until then, that was the only way you could hear Nicholas on any recording. Then in 1994, Antones released his CD Thrill On The Hill, a live CD which brought him again to the forefront of the world blues scene again. And now he has finished a new CD, Rockin' My Blues To Sleep, for TopCat Records. This CD is a more refined studio recording produced by none other than blues player and producer extraordinaire Stephen Bruton. Subtitled "Texas / Louisiana Blues & Dance Hall Favorites", Nicholas' lastest effort host an internationally famous line up of talent and tunes. Featuring Marcia Ball (piano,vocals and recently appearing with B.B. King), Steve Bruton (guitarist for Emmy Lou Harris) and Doug Sahm's horn section makes this CD cook like a 24hr. New Orleans kitchen. Austin's favorite, veteran blues guitarist Bill Campbell adds the hot sauce to a perfect plate of gulf coast R 'n B. The popular, world touring Nicholas serves up yet another work of great musicians and infectious classic and original tunes. Every fan of Johnny's and the "real stuff" will be thrilled to add this new Topcat release to their collection. This CD is proof of Johnny Nicholas' blues acumen and is a joy to listen to. Without a doubt, this CD is a testament to the fact that Johnny is back in force. Welcome home!

Rockin' My Blues To Sleep music CDs
$11.75 Tinsley Ellis' second outing for the TelArc label builds heartily on the fiery blues-rock of 2002's Hell or High Water by adding a mere soupçon of spooky rhythm and blues to his stealthy mix. Self-produced with engineering by the one and only Jim "Z" Zumpano, Ellis uses his core band of rhythm guitarist Oliver Wood, organist Kevin McKendree, bassist the Evil One, and drummer Richard Hayward from Little Feat. Ellis' moody scorch-and-torch blues, like labelmate Ronnie Earl's spiritual blues wail, are two distinguishing voices on a scene that is rife with cookie-cutter clichés and unimaginative song styles. The Hard Way is drenched in Southern soul and spooky, minor key blues; they blend perfectly adding depth, dynamic, and tension to a slate of songs that offers a rounded view of Ellis at this point in his career. What sets Hard Way and its 2002 predecessor apart from other blues records on the market is Ellis' restless approach to his craft. He is not content to rest on his laurels, or to merely stick knee-deep in the glorious mud of a blues style he created. He relentlessly ...

All of these words describe John Winn, a multi-talented man grounded in music, with a life-long love of skiing and mountains.Winn's musical career has spanned six decades, starting with formal voice training in college, stints as a tenor with a municipal opera company in St. Louis, and as a coffeehouse singer in the early days of folk music in New York City. Winn traveled with the Belafonte Singers, performed on stages with Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, and Jose Feliciano, and performed at New York's Carnegie Hall with many of the early folk artists. Born near Hannibal, MO in 1934, Winn grew up in the heart of the depression. A high school teacher identified his strong tenor voice and encouraged him, and he studied voice at Culver Stockton College in MO and performed with the municipal opera in St. Louis, MO. In the early 1950's, Winn's interest in skiing brought him to Summit County, Colorado, where he found work at Ski Tip Ranch near Arapahoe Basin. In 1954, while serving in the US Army in Fort Carson, CO, he picked up a guitar and started a life-long love of the instrument. After ...
