| | Hayden Skyscraper National Park CD Hayden Discography of CDs
Touted early on as a Canadian counterpart to Beck, singer-songwriter Hayden (aka Paul Hayden Desser) found himself without a label after a few promising outings for the majors. Initially self-issued in very limited numbers, SKYSCRAPER NATIONAL PARK garnered significant indie buzz, and for good reason--the album, which was eventually released in the U.S in 2002, is a meditative, folk-influenced masterpiece marked by Hayden's wistful vocals and chiming guitar lines (see the subtly expansive "Dynamite Walls"). Although it seemed as if Hayden would be unable to match this underrated low-key triumph, he did exactly that on his equally impressive `04 follow-up, ELK-LAKE SERENADE. haydenskyscraper national parkHayden breaks his 3-year silence. Skyscraper National Park is the welcome return from self-imposed exile. Critically acclaimed yet commercially overlooked, Hayden's path is as storied as it is unconventional. In 1992, Hayden first begins writing and recording his own material at home on a 4-track. He creates his own label, Hardwood, and spends the next three years releasing 7 singles, EPs and his first album. Major label interest follows and Hayden moves out of basement recordings and into the studio. In 1996, Hayden is declared "vital" by the taste-makers at SPIN magazine and Everything I Long For is proclaimed by Jerry Seinfeld to be his favorite album of the year. Cult status is cemented with Hayden's contribution of the title track to Steve Buscemi's film, Trees Lounge. Hayden releases The Closer I Get in 1998 and tours for 8 months across Canada, the United States and Japan. As the label he had signed to in the U.S. (Outpost/Geffen) dissolves, Hayden himself disappears into the ether. The interim has found Hayden occupying mythical status, where he has been subject of Bigfoot-like sightings and rumours of activity. His fans have stubbornly refused to accept his absence and optimistically speculated that there was a new release around the corner. This belief proved true as, in 2001, Hayden responded to his artistic voice and began recording songs anew. Hayden prefers to rely on his instincts and do what comes most naturally. Honesty is the guiding principal of his art - there are no tricks or gimmicks. Skyscraper National Park (Badman Recording Co. ) occupies a diverse landscape: raw and bleak, yet warm and bright at once. Characteristically, Hayden chooses to speak little of his music, confessing that he is most comfortable expressing himself in his songs, where he is able to present himself most accurately. From a high falsetto to a low growl, from a distant piano and thin guitar to lush strings and horns, Hayden traverses the span of wide-open spaces to solitary introspection. There is heartbreak and there is comfort. There is light and there is shadow. The misconceptions of a soul that is troubled and moody are dispelled by Hayden's light touch and easy sense of humor.Uncut (1/03, p.97) - Ranked #62 in Uncut's "100 Best Albums of the Year" Magnet (6-7/02, p.92) - "...Reserve SKYSCRAPER a space on your 2002 top-10 list." CMJ (3/11/02, p.5) - "...11 tracks of hope, heartbreak and melancholic macabre....a Neil Young-influenced falsetto...create[s] a number of melodically gorgeous tracks..." Mojo (Publisher) (12/02, p.114) - "...Utterly delectable....Everything about this record - musicianship, songcraft, lyrics - is superior..." Skyscraper National Park album
$13.85 Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted to a pressing of just 2,000 copies -- is far darker and more experimental, as evidenced by the set launcher, "There Is No Music." Meshing a slide guitar with a brooding lo-fi feel, the song's alt-country leanings uneasily shift into the electronic-tinged "Myrna Loy." While there are contagious moments like "Rooting for the Plague" and the profane singalong "I Don't Want to Fuck Off Anymore," ...

| | Hayden Elk-Lake Serenade CD (2004)
Skyscraper National Park music CDs
$12.75 The follow-up to his lauded SKYSCRAPER NATIONAL PARK, 2004's ELK-LAKE SERENADE finds Canadian singer/songwriter Hayden hitting a creative stride. Here the atmospheric expanse of SKYSCRAPER is scaled back to form catchier, tighter melodies that reveal themselves in a collection of memorably narrative songs. "Wide Eyes" drifts in with a spare piano-and-strings-based arrangement, conveying both heartbreak and newfound love in its lyrics. Relationships, both good and bad, are a central theme to many of SERENADE's tunes, and Hayden imbues these tales with his wry wit, particularly on the upbeat "Hollywood Ending," which finds the narrator in a surprise encounter with a beautiful movie star.
Hayden has been compared to Beck and Neil Young in the past, and although he shares ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Skyscraper National Park songs
$11.89 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems ...
| | Elliott Smith From A Basement On The Hill CD (2004)
Skyscraper National Park album
$15.25 Elliott Smith's death in 2003 left a cavernous hole in the world of popular music. Tender, intimate, and painfully honest, the songs in Smith's catalogue capture the fragility of human existence with rare, breathtaking beauty. On his first posthumous release, Smith reaffirms his status as an extraordinarily gifted artist, giving fans yet another reason to mourn his tragic loss.
Conceived as an ambitious double album, FROM A BASEMENT ON THE HILL was ultimately narrowed down to 15 tracks by Smith's close friends, producer Rob ...
| | Hayden In Field & Town CD (2007) Digipak
Skyscraper National Park CD music
$11.39 Thirteen years after his highly lauded debut and four since his last offering, Hayden released IN FIELD & TOWN, a record that confidently reestablished the Canadian in the indie singer-songwriter vanguard. While Hayden has always brazenly copped Neil Young, this record--his sixth--follows in the mellow rustic tradition of Young's HARVEST and HARVEST MOON, while sonically expanding on their templates. Oddly placed synth lines, treated guitars, and a surprisingly funky rhythm section ...
