Hip-hop does not look kindly on its veteran artists apart from anything other than lip service -- names are dropped all the time, but it's hard to sustain a career into a second decade for many rappers. Naughty by Nature acknowledge that situation with a wink on their fifth album, titling it Iicons and offering a definition of the word on the cover, thereby setting themselves up as icons, as titans of their genre. Which, in many ways, they are, as this rock-solid record proves. They might never have been innovators on the level of Public Enemy or Ice Cube, but they were always strong, forceful MCs and good songwriters who made strong records. Iicons is firmly within that tradition. There are a few things that make it feel modern -- some guest MC appearance, a production that is on the whole kind of spare, a stellar duet with Pink -- but the overall aesthetic is from the early '90s, when the group was at their popular peak. This doesn't mean it sounds outdated; it means that the group still crafts dynamic, varied albums, where the singles aren't the only songs that are memorable. Sure, it's a bit traditionalist, but in the best possible sense -- it keeps what's best about the form, giving the album a strong foundation, and builds on it, resulting a record that feels fresh and classic and thereby proving that it is possible to sustain a career in hip-hop without a loss of musical quality. Maybe these guys deserve to be called icons after all. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Against all odds, that salacious crew that declared itself "Down with O.P.P." back in the '80s managed to survive the ups and downs of the mercurial hip-hop world and make it into the 21st century. For those who only know Vinnie and Treach by that aforementioned Jacksons-sampling hit, IICONS may come as a bit of a revelation. While NBN still has the wild thing on its collective mind (as exemplified most effectively by "What You Wanna Do," to which Pink adds some sensuous crooning), there's more than unfettered carnality at work here. From the complex imagery and polysyllabic rhyming of the opening title cut to the cutting sociological critique of "Let Me Find Out," Naughty By Nature displays an impressive lyrical facility for themes that reach beyond the call of booty. Incendiary guest shots from Redman, Method Man, Queen Latifah, and others help spice things up, making IICONS an impressive offering from these rap veterans. Iicons Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) SOME WILD MUTHA'S Naughty has been holdin it down for years, and compared to a few previous albums this is bumpin. Minus one of the trio on this Treach and Vinnie show they can still have your head nodding.
Redman and Methodman come threw "On Rock and Roll" which has a ok beat but nice lyrics. Surprisingly Pink stops in on "What You Wanna Do" and the song is great, I really thought this song would't be to good, I was wrong. A classic comes in on "Swing Swang", and on "Feels Good" with 3LW proving they still make hits.
Other good tracks include "Let Me Find Out", "What You don't Know", and "Wild Mutha's" with Lil Jon and Chyna White. Ending the album is the best song i think they have ever done "Family Tree". In this they speak of Kay G, and the great 2pac.
Over all it is a step up from other recent work, but they still need Kay G. Submitted by FMWAALEX (Delmare, MD, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
naughty´s back wit´ mo´ classic party anthems Yo! ive been listenin this album and i think is the best hip hop album in 2002. this is a real comeback by naughty full of classic anthems. Strictly 4 Treach & Vinnie fans. The production is even doper now without Kay Gee. Nu fresh sounds 4 summer like "Swing Swag" & "Family Tree" and an incredible posse cut "NJ To LA" with partnes Rottin Razkalz. This is the best Naughty album since their debut. U betta buy it or copy it, 4 real. Submitted by realrory (Canary Islands, Spain) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$39.39 While lacking the monumental impact of Kick Out the Jams, the MC5's second album is in many regards their best and most influential, its lean, edgy sound anticipating the emergence of both the punk and power pop movements to follow later in the decade. Bookended by a pair of telling covers -- Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" and Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A." -- the disc is as much a look back at rock & roll's origins as it is a push forward into the music's future; given the Five's vaunted revolutionary leanings, for instance, it's both surprising and refreshing to discover the record's emotional centerpiece is a doo wop-inspired ballad, "Let Me Try," that's the most lovely and gentle song in their catalog. The recurring theme which drives Back in the USA is adolescence, its reminiscences alternately fond and embittered -- while cuts like "Tonight," "Teenage Lust," "High School," and "Shakin' Street" celebrate youth in all its rebellious glory, others like "The American Ruse" and "The Human Being Lawnmower" condemn a system which eats its young, filling their heads with lies before sending them off to war. Equally gripping is the record's singular sound -- produced by Jon Landau with an almost complete disregard for the bottom end, ...
