Anthony Robbins, Bruce McGill, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jason Alexander, Joe Viterelli, Rene Kirby - Director: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly Directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly continue their string of hilarious oddball comedies with SHALLOW HAL. Hal (Jack Black of HIGH FIDELITY) is a "regular guy" who has no luck with women because he only wants to be with women who look like supermodels. Then self-help guru Tony Robbins hypnotizes Hal so that he can see a woman's inner beauty. When Hal meets Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow), a Peace Corps volunteer who is smart and funny, he thinks his dreams have come true. Others, like Hal's slimy friend Mauricio (Jason Alexander), see Rosie for what she is, a 300-pound woman, but Hal can only see the beauty on the inside, so to him she looks like Gwyneth Paltrow.
Black shines in his first starring role. His engagingly manic energy keeps the film in high gear. Paltrow skillfully plays Rosemary as an obese woman in a thin woman's body. The Farrelly brothers' comedies work so well because they mix off-the-wall humor with characters the audience identifies with and cares about. SHALLOW HAL is outrageous and funny, occasionally exceeding the bounds of good taste, but it's also a touching love story. Fans of Black's band, Tenacious D, will be happy to see bandmate Kyle Gass in a small role. Shallow Hal Reviews: "...Touching....A tender fable and a winning love story....The Farrellys present their parable with absolute conviction..."
-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "...[Featuring] a notably touching, sensitive performance from sylphlike Paltrow..."-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "...A touching story with a heartfelt message about inner beauty....It all manages to work..."-- Wade Major, Box Office "...There isn't a smug frame in SHALLOW HAL, due mostly to Black's persuasive, wide-eyed idealism..."
-- Ryan Gilbey, Sight and Sound "...It's cleverly done....Black makes a surprisingly goofy romantic lead and plays some enjoyably tender scenes with Paltrow..."
-- Ceri Thomas, Total Film "...[The Farrelly brothers] manage a surprisingly moving outcome..."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times Shallow Hal | List Price | $14.98 (You save $4.69) | | Studio | 20th Century Fox | | Orig Year | 2001 | | DVD Encoding | Region 1 | | All Time Sales Rank | 5920 | | CD Universe Part number | 3051264 | | Catalog number | 2004005 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jul 02, 2002 | | Rating | PG-13 (MPAA) | | Rating Reason | language and sexual content | | Running Time | 113 Minutes | | Additional Info | Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled; DTS Sound | | Movie Details | Color; Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled; DTS Sound; Sensormatic Security Tag |
Shallow Hal Movie Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews I just ordered the DVD I got kinda dragged to see this movie on a date, but it turned about to be a stellar flick, funny but a lot deeper than you would think. The scene with the little girl at the burn center bought a tear to my eye. A great movie, funny with an outstanding message. Submitted by J.B. Shallow Hal is a True Rarity The concept of beautiful women with humble dispositions are rare to find in society. This poignant comedy about the inner beauty predominating over outer beauty exudes an introspective feeling, in which helps to shape the way we treat others around us.
Entertainment and education, a combination of which rarely ever coexists in movies; films that educate are usually tedious school-related documentaries. I really enjoyed this movie; it truly is a rarity. Submitted by Danny (Fountain Valley, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One Of The Best Movies I've Have Ever Seen!!! First of all this is one of the best movie's I have ever seen. I mean everything in this movie is perfect, not one flaw. I am a huge Jack Black fan and thought he delievered his best performance in his career and also his best movie. Also Jason Alexander played his part perfect. I thought he was hilarious in this film. Also I think Black/Alexander make a great comedic duo. Also Gweneth Paltrow always gives a good performance in every movie so she did a great job too in this movie. Trust me see this movie it's so caring and it has a lot of heart and plus I love the message or theme throughout this movie. Honestly this really is one of the best movie's I have ever seen. Also I think this is the best Farelly's Brother's movie they have directed throughout their whole career. Also If you want to see other great comedies by the Farelly Brothers I suggest "Dumb and Dumber", "Kingpin", "There's Something About Mary", "Me, Myself, and Irene", and "Stuck On You", and also "Fever Pitch". Trust me this movie is amzing, check it out. Definetely a must buy to add to your dvd collection. Submitted by ajay204182 (East Hanover, NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Extremely Funny! This movie was in my opinion extremely funny. I'm a Jack Black fan to begin with and he shined in this. but to get to the point here, this movie should be viewed to all the "Shallow Hals" of the world. Men today all want "10's". I have been with my share of 10's in my life and they usually turn out to be the most shallowest, self-serving, arrogant, egocentric, narcistic, selfish, all about me, highest maintenance bitches of the universe. The majority of them, their second cars are brooms. I don't do 10's anymore and they are a thing of the past to me. And actually I have had more fun with just average looking women who I found out were usually the most intelligent women to interact with. Shallow Hal teaches a good lesson even though this is a top notch comedy. Watch it all you Shallow Hals out there and you might learn something here. I rest my case. Submitted by John (Muskegon, MI. $8.95 Loosely based on the 1960 Rat Pack film of the same name, OCEAN'S 11 is a hi-tech crime comedy that features a top-notch cast. Con man Danny Ocean (George Clooney) has just been released from a four-year jail term and decides that his first order of business is robbing three Las Vegas casinos owned by the slimy Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia). To pull off this nearly impossible task, he quickly assembles an eclectic crew--including a card shark (Brad Pitt), a pickpocket (Matt Damon), an explosives expert (Don Cheadle), and an aging gambler (Carl Reiner)--and seeks financial backing from a freewheeling casino mogul (Elliott Gould) who holds a grudge against Benedict. However, it soon becomes apparent that Ocean has more at stake than money and his newly found freedom--his ex-wife, Tess (Julia Roberts), just happens to be Benedict's new girlfriend. Can Ocean steal back Tess's heart and more than a hundred million dollars at the same time?
