ASHANTI won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album.
Ashanti was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. "Foolish" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
The young R&B thrush Ashanti makes an impressive showing on her self-titled debut album. Unlike many of her peers, Ashanti doesn't resort to vocal histrionics; this siren is more concerned with communicating the emotion of a song than showing off her chops. In fact, the reigning mood on this disc is a gauzy, slow-burn feel that makes the most of Ashanti's sensual, low-key style. Often she seems to be whispering right into your ear. Though there's an undercurrent of hip-hop-influenced production, that simmering, late-night feel remains consistent through the torch ballad "Foolish" (when will these spurned lovers learn?), the considerably less tortured "Happy," and the irresistible come-on of "Movies." Perhaps most telling of all, however, is the closing track "Thank You," which affords us the opportunity to hear Ashanti sing unaccompanied, revealing in plain sight the considerable pipes whose strength she tastefully downplays to fine effect throughout ASHANTI.
Young, pretty, sexy, stylish, and hip, Ashanti is everything a modern, post-hip-hop soul crooner should be. She looks the part, trucks with hitmakers -- at the time her eponymous debut was released, she was featured on a hit single by Fat Joe -- and even approximates Alicia Keys' visuals on the back cover. She can sing, but she's not showy; she never hyperventilates, she croons. Her first album sounds modern, with fairly fresh beats and lightly insistent hooks, and is just naughty enough to warrant a parental advisory sticker (though if you're just listening to this record, it's nigh on impossible to figure out where the objectionable lines are). So why doesn't Ashanti play as greater than the sum of its parts? Largely because it lacks distinctive material, in either terms of the actual songs or the production -- and when that's combined with a singer who is good, yet not distinctive herself, the entire production sounds as if its treading water or providing nifty aural wallpaper. It's not bad by any means, and it has its moments, but at 17 tracks, including skits, it all becomes a blur. A pleasing blur, one that shows promise, but a blur all the same. [The clean edition edits any profanity or questionable language from the album.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Ashanti Chapter II CD (2003)
Ashanti songs
$11.19 Skits notwithstanding, Ashanti's sophomore album is a confident leap away from her self-titled debut. She makes the most of her lightweight, breathy voice, incorporating airy, summery, string-laced arrangements in a variety of settings that go down extremely smoothly even, as in "Living My Life," when they're about that thorniest of topics, the struggle to make it.
Ashanti never hectors or browbeats, instead soaring effortlessly above the Murder Inc. goons who populate the skits between the cuts, sounding persuasive even on an ostensibly downbeat song such as "Carry On." The lyrics may tell us she's had enough, but there's a quiet, constant center to her voice that says otherwise. She's also at home with a sexy lyric such as that of the self-descriptive "Ohhh Ahhh," and her delivery is confident and understated even here. CHAPTER II is an assured, leisurely ride with an artist who's becoming more accomplished with time and experience.
CHAPTER II was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. "Rain On Me" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. "Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)" was nominated for Best R&B Song.

| | M*A*S*H DVD (1970) Widescreen
Ashanti album
$10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd three-ring circus. Other characters include the uptight nurse "Hot Lips" O'Houlihan (Sally Kellerman), the confused Major Frank Burns (Robert Duvall), the troubled Captain "Painless" Waldowski (John Shuck), and the simpleminded Captain "Duke" Forrest (Tom Skerritt). Altman's decision to present his film as a series of loosely connected vignettes rather than a traditionally unfolding narrative perfectly captures the freewheeling spirit so unique to early-'70s cinema.

M.O.P. has succeeded in doing what few hardcore rap groups have been able to do, by increasing the quality of production on their album and still keeping that same raw, rough feel that typically disappears as money enters the equation. While the album is solid from start to finish, "Anticipation" stands out, partly inspired by KRS-One's "MC's Act Like They Don't Know." The title track, "Firing Squad," is a slow, rumbling tune with some low-end piano riffs helping to keep it moving along. DJ Premier of Gangstarr makes an appearance on "Downtown Swinga ('96)," providing a funky bassline for the duo to scream over. This is what you've waited for. ~ Brad Mills

From the looks of the album cover, a neutered sub-Kozik illustration of a cute girl shaking her pelvis so hard you can see her panties, and the group's adoption of nouveau-rockabilly looks, you might think that the Red Elvises are a group of psychobilly rockabilly cats. Take another look. Specifically, look at the back cover, at the guy in the upper right-hand corner. His name is Oleg and he has a huge open-mouthed grin, the kind of vacant expression that is never seen in rock & roll. It's the first indication that the Red Elvises are not what they seem; they're really kindred spirits with Rednex, not Jon Spencer. That means they're trashy Europop. They don't even send up Americana that much, the way Rednex really did with "Cotton Eyed Joe." They just turn out some low-key Eurodisco with goofy lyrics and voices and reasonably catchy hooks. It's fairly pleasant Europop, but it's not particularly memorable outside of its packaging. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Ashanti music CDs
$13.99 8Ball may be best known for his collaborations with MJG, but he's certainly no slouch when left to his own devices, as evidenced by ALMOST FAMOUS. The opening cut "Thorn" is something of a mission statement, where 8Ball pledges to "keep it hardcore" while explaining that anyone who covets his position will first have to see all the things he's seen, describing himself as a thorn on a rosebush. Over a syncopated, Latin-tinged beat on "No Sellout" (which features a guest appearance by Koncrete), 8Ball further attests to his street-cred hip-hop commitment via some urgent, high-speed rapping. The R&B-laced, downtempo "Daddy" takes a sympathetic look at a prevalent slice of modern urban life, the absent father. Even as he runs through a host of societal ills on almost famous, 8Ball has a long enough view to make good on the pledge he makes in the aforementioned "Thorn," to "let the world see the beauty in these ugly things," and that's what gives him an edge over more one-dimensional rappers.
Recorded at Doppler Studios, Atlanta, Georgia and Ball Room Studios, Houston, Texas.
