Kind of a minor league version of the Doors, Clear Light were a West Coast phenomenon, and although they didn't last too long, were an interesting group. A very good slice of Los Angeles psychedelia, Clear Light were a six-piece band that combined folk, rock, psychedelia, and even a touch of classical to their sound. The end result, though, is a little ponderous and pretentious, but strangely listenable. The big hit off this album (produced by Paul Rothchild and engineered by Bruce Botnick) was "Mr. Blue," a psychedelic folk song written by Tom Paxton. It's over six-minutes long and a bit overbaked, but it does have an odd appeal. The finer moments are guitarist Bob Seal's psychedelic folk-rock songs, namely "With All in Mind" and "They Who Have Nothing." Singer Cliff DeYoung went on to have a successful acting career, bass player Doug Lubahn played on the early Doors albums, Dallas Taylor went on to drum for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and John Sebastian, and keyboardist Ralph Schuckett became one of the more popular West Coast session players and arrangers. A lot of talent in a short-lived ensemble. Dated but charming West Coast psychedelia. ~ Matthew Greenwald

Clear Light Music Review Average Rating: (3.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews clearlight tops with headlizard! The Clearlight album is clearly exceptional, addressing the LA acid rock scene as it really was. Played at exremeley high volume, the true effects of the album come screaming thru. very disappointed After reading the other reviews I thought this was going to be a "lost gem" found. The sound bites that I listened to were impressive, unfortunately none of the songs held up in their entirety. The only good thing about this album is that two of it's members went on to greater musical achievements. That being Dallas Taylor and Doug Lubahn. Maybe if Paul Rothchild had been a little less controlling and let the band play up to their potential...? Submitted by a reviewer (Rob in Grapeview Wa.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Amazingly Well Played and Well Recorded in 1967 I initially listened to this album when I was 16 years old and I liked it alot.
I was surprised to see it available; as this band was never a household word or name brand. They played so well at the time I thought it was a shame more people didn't know about them.
The recording is very well done and those fond of listening to the rhythm section will find a lot to like about the 2 drummers and the fantastic bass playing of Douglas Lubahn.
As a kid I liked some of the more bombastic and harsh songs like "Mr. Blue" and "Street Singer" but now I skip these with the discretion that CD technology allows. "Black Roses"and "With All In Mind" are 2 titles that instantly come to mind as favourites great up tempo tunes that show much more musical development than you might expect for 2 minute 30 second songs. I know this music was dubbed psychodelic but I would call it progressive pop; flavoured by being developed and played in 1967. When I extracted the best of this CD I had 9 tunes running around 18-19 minutes but well worth it to me. Submitted by steveblomerth (Danvers,MA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Still enjoyable after 35 years ! bought the album in 1967 and immediately
was hooked ! Far superior in their day to contemporary artists, except for say Arthur Lee and Love. From the dark "Mr. Blue " a Tom Paxton song ,to the lilting " A Childs' Smile ", Cliff DeYoungs, ( before he pursued acting ) vocals fit the sound perfectly. Only disappointment is the fact that they only recorded one album ! Submitted by a reviewer (Julian, NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
CLEAR AS A BELL It should have been "clear" to everyone. The "light" at the end of the tunnel was shining brightly. This group should have been as popular as Buffalo Springfield or Love. Overall, they sound more like Arthur Lee's group Love than any other band at the time. But beyond that, they had their own unique sound. There are a few psychedelic songs on here, some straight ahead rockers and a couple of nice ballads----they were certainly capable of delivering variety. The song "Sand" is one of the greatest psychedelic songs of all time and is probably worth the price alone for this song. But of the 12 songs on the CD, there's only one song that I really don't care for that much---this is a great average. My favorite has got to be "How Many Days Have Passed" which could have been a great single release. Anyway, too bad they didn't make a second album because one wasn't enough. $13.59 H.P. Lovecraft's two self-titled albums are collected onto one disc that traces the band's development from a second-string psych band to a darker, proto-prog rock outfit. Despite some dated tracks on the first album and a slight lack of focus on the second, songs like "Wayfaring Stranger," "Time Machine," and "At the Mountains of Madness" showcase the unique harmonies and arrangments that made H.P.
