The first of Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser's exploitive cosmic space rock albums is also the best, and certainly kicks the seat out of the many jam bands that arose in the '90s. Unlike most "super groups" who collapse under the weight of their own hubris, the Cosmic Jokers, who were never really a proper group anyway, almost improve upon the sound of their precursors, namely Manuel Göttsching and Klaus Schulze from acid-jam-supreme Ash Ra Tempel, and Jurgen Dollase and Harald Grosskopf from blitzkrieg psychedelic Wallenstein. Structurally, the record is similar to those vintage Ash Ra Tempel albums, with two sidelong suites, the first side representing the peak of the acid freakout and the second side more relaxed, acting as the chill out later in the trip. Thus, the first side, "&Galactic Joke," has more emphasis on Gottsching's freaked-out guitar, as the music slowly builds to full phased-out fury and then subsides and builds again. The flip side, "Cosmic Joke," is mellower, though no less improvised as it travels with Schulze's keyboard washes at the forefront into deepest space on a similarly slow ebb and flow. The effects are laid on much thicker than on a normal Ash Ra effort, especially on this second track, enhancing the sci-fi aspects as the mixing board of Dieter Dierks adds another dimension to the sound. Unlike later Cosmic Jokers records, where vocals were added in, this album is completely instrumental, letting the music stand by itself. ~ Rolf Semprebon

| Cosmic Jokers Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Great Cosmic Rock I got this cd for $22 in late 2006 through mail order.I cant say that i was dissapointed in my purchase. On this cd,there are 2 songs, which are"Galactic Joke",which is 22.5 minutes long, and"Cosmic Joy",which is 19.5 minutes long.On the first song, there are moments of space-rock jams, and spacey, mellow moments.Sometimes, the drums are not always as audible, and there is lots of guitar work at times. On the second song, there are more mellow, spacey moments(kind of bordering on new age music at times),but there are a few rocking moments, though not as audible, but still present,if you listen closely. In some ways, this sounds like it could have come out in the early 80's.I read that this came out in 1973-74.In all,a great cd,though it may take a few listens to get into, but still worth checking out. Fantastic As I have followed ex tangerine dream members such as klaus schulze who is on this album, I have discovered some great stuff. Two long instrumental tracks, great guitar work by Michael Gottsching( Ash ra temple). I guess they called it cosmic rock, some synthesizer but blended in to the rock sounds. A well done, must listen to album. Submitted by Jim (Winnipeg MB canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Cosmic Jokers - self-titled (Spalax) Originally released in 1974,this was Cosmic Joker's very first album out of five.Ironic enough, all five were put out that same year.Cosmic Jokers were a krautrock super group, featuring Manuel Gottsching(Ash Ra Tempel),Klaus Schulze(Tangerine Dream),two members from Wallenstein and ace producer Dieter Dierks at the mixing board.CD has just two tracks. Both are rather lengthy kraut/freak out pieces."Galactic Joke"(22:30)and "Cosmic Joy"(19:24).Recommended if you enjoy this genre. Cosmic Jokers
$9.29 The Fray: Joe King (vocals, guitar); Isaac Slade (vocals, piano); Dave Welsh (guitar); Ben Wysocki (drum). Audio Mixer: Mark Endert . Recording information: Coupe Studios, Bloulder, CO; Echo Park Studios, Bloomington, IN; FTM Studios, Lakewood, CO; Sony Studios, NY NY. This Denver-based quartet mixes the sweeping, arena-ready feel of Coldplay with the sincere, radio-friendly folk-rock of bands like Counting Crows for a highly melodic brand of palatable pop. The Fray's first release, HOW TO SAVE A LIFE, is packed with songs that push all the right mass-appeal buttons: sumptuous piano, swaying mid-tempo rhythms, anthemic choruses, and alternately soaring and meandering melodies sung in a high, emotive voice. Bridging stadium rock, emo, and classic rock on the order of U2, the Fray makes an assured first statement on their debut. The Fray were among the first of the flood of bands that combined the influence of British neo-stadium acts like Coldplay and Keane, the retro-AOR bands of the mid-'90s -- chief among them Counting Crows and the Wallflowers -- and American emo-pop bands like Something Corporate and Jimmy Eat World. The Denver four-piece has the requisite piano and flag-waving choruses of the Brits, the slick sound and unfailing conservatism of the AOR bands, and the over-emoted vocals and confessional nature that are cornerstones of emo. All the songs on their debut, How to Save a Life, sound almost exactly alike and also exactly like you would expect -- sincere, melodic, authentic, and bereft of anything surprising or exciting. This doesn't make for the kind of record that people will want to listen to over and over again but for modern rock, it isn't half-bad. A couple of songs, like "Over My Head (Cable Car)" and "Dead Wrong," might even sound good in the background of a WB teen drama. ~ Tim Sendra The Fray was among the first ...

Cosmic Jokers
$12.39 With a true heart and passion for Christ, “In the Shadow of the Cross”, is truly an inspiring and original Cd of what one woman can do with what she believes in.From the worst of times to the best of times, every song on this Cd tell’s a story of one woman’s struggle thru life’s journey and is enveloped thru a passion for Christ, his love and power that carries us through every step we take. We are not alone……………Having done it all thru her life, Trish has delved into the “Blues, Celtic, Folk Rock, and Contemporary Christian over the last 30 years. One thing that has never waivered is her love for God, people and her ability to witness thru the words and songs she writes.Filled with lyrics that will stir your heart up and melodies that will have you “get up” and want to sing and worship to, theirs is no lack of genres in this great compilation. From unique keyboards, to acoustic guitar, and to throw in some great electric leads and wonderful symphonic sounds, you will not lack for any style and message that will touch your heart.“In the Shadow of the Cross” deals with the struggling times when the weight of the world seems to be on our shoulders and there is truly one place we can run: In the shadow of the Cross. “There are good days and then there are those moment’s in life when we wonder if we will survive it, “ but Trish’s true testimony is that thru the most universal language that God has given, we can share and support each other in this roller coaster ride we call life. Every song on this Cd is a special, intimate moment in life, some happy, some sad, but the end result is that between the rare vocals and heart driven songs, you will find yourself understanding, sharing, and listening to one of a kind tunes that will stay with your heart and mind throughout the entire day. Song’s that will lead you into a wonderful worship and true testament of the Lord.Trish’s simple mission statement is this:“I have worked with wonderful musicians all of my life, but it seems that I have been brought to a place now where I am asked to walk one on one with the Lord. He gives me the songs through my seasons in life. They are real and very dear to my heart. I write, record and produce them myself with his wonderful hand covering every step. There is so much music and musician’s out in the world today, but in my heart, I believe that every song is written for “someone”. Someone that the Lord has placed to witness to through music. We should never rival ourselves against one another, but come together for a greater cause in music: Touching souls and staying as original in our music as God has created us. This is our only way to touch everyone in the world and to offer a solution to solitude and suffering.Life has been a hard road for Trish, from an 18 year marriage ending, to trying to survive with absolutely nothing left to raise her children on. By the grace of God, he was there every step of the way and supplied exactly what was needed. He even went above and beyond what Trish had ever expected. A dream that was to truly be able to serve him in music ministry and to be able to share her testimony thru music with the world in hopes of a healing for others.“I have learned strength in my trials, and mercy in my downfalls, but I do know that there is a reason for everything that happens in life, and there is one person that will bring you out of the deepest parts of your darkest hours. Jesus Christ.”With an even ...
