Initial pressings of STEREO will include the album MONO by Grandpaboy.

STEREO contains the hidden track, "Strike Down The Band," which occurs between "Don't Want Never" and "Mr. Rabbit."

This is the album that Paul Westerberg's admirers have been wishing he would make ever since his solo career arose out the ashes of the Replacements. While inconsistent songwriting and questionable production decisions marred much of the legendary singer/songwriter's previous solo releases, STEREO (and it's accompanying disc MONO) represents a glorious return to form not just on a sonic level, but in terms of song quality as well. Ironically, STEREO is a literal solo effort, with most of the songs centered around Westerberg's craggy voice and (predominantly acoustic) guitar. Most of the tunes are ballads that will bring a smile to the face of anyone who ever shed a tear for "Skyway" or "Swingin' Party."

On the other side of the coin, MONO is a straight-out rock album, full of the kind of raw, unkempt guitar din bands merely think they have a handle on. A proven master of such aural carnage, Westerberg joyously tears into such tunes as "Footsteps" (whose main riff bears echoes of the Who's "Substitute") with the sort of abandon for which Replacements fans spent years vainly sifting through previous Westerberg albums. Most emblematic of Westerberg's new/old gestalt is the gloriously reckless, self-explanatory "Knock It Right Out," and thank goodness he finally did.

Personnel includes: Paul Westerberg, Elrod Puce, Zeke Pine, Henry Twiddle, Luther Covington.Rolling Stone (5/9/02, pp.74-76) - 3.5 out of 5 stars - "...MONO [is] the louder half of this double-disc release....[STEREO is] an album of post-punk saloon ballads..."
Spin (6/02, p.109) - 6 out of 10 - "...Thoughtfully observed, carefully played, and achin' to be respectable..."
Q (6/02, p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Chiming with the sound of Westerberg's signature irreverent guitar and topped off by half-sung, half-drooled lyrics, it's just fine..."
Uncut (1/03, p.95) - Ranked #28 in Uncut's "100 Best Albums of the Year" - "...The first features lovely, home-recorded ballads. The second bristles with punk exuberance..."
Alternative Press (6/02, p.90) - 6 out of 10 - "...His melodies are golden, and he occasionally demonstrates why one major magazine once labeled him the embodiment of rock'n'roll..."
CMJ (4/29/02, p.12) - "...An acoustic-based introspective work..."
Mojo (Publisher) (7/02, p.104) - "...The singers in these songs look an awful lot like a fella we know who had the misfortune of being stuck post-punk and pre-emo..."

Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) 3.5 stars

5 stars Restored the faith
STEREO, and the companion disc MONO included within, signaled Paul Westerberg's return to the rough-around-the-edges style that he was once known for (in the band The Replacements). Before MONO and STEREO a few maudlin, largely piano-composed solo efforts (EVENTUALLY, 14 SONGS, SUICAINE GRATIFACTION) had fans including myself worried. STEREO restored the faith. Paul found his edge again. It is the right place for anyone who hasn't heard Paul to start listening. Work forward from here.

4 stars He's still got it
get this one for the disc entitled mono. I feel like burning this disc for everyone I know. There's hardly a dull moment. 4 and a half stars. The stereo disc is okay to.

2 stars Same old, same old
As much as I don't want to admit it, the Paul Westerberg of The Replacements is long gone. The genious songwriter is content with mellower songs that lack the edgy rock sound he mastered with his former band. The best part of "Stereo" is the inclusion of Grandpa Boy's "Mono" disc. The last two discs, while being OK, continue to be more about what Westerberg wants instead of what the majority of fans want him to be. Too bad.

Far too much attention has been focused on this album's tortured history; band makes weird album, label rejects it, band buys it back and puts it out a year later through another arm of the same corporation. For the record, wildly overexcited Radiohead comparisons aside, the album's not that weird--it merely ventures a bit further down the sonic-shambles roads explored on the band's previous two releases. As has been noted elsewhere, the most valid reference point for the occasional pop deconstructions of YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT is Big Star's THIRD/SISTER LOVERS, not Thom Yorke and company. The most significant factor in this nominal weird-out is the presence of producer Jim O'Rourke, whose avant-rock tendencies loom large here. Nevertheless, beneath the layers of warped keyboards and slow-death guitars, Wilco mastermind Jeff Tweedy has loaded the album with catchy (yes, catchy) tunes ...

WHEN I WAS CRUEL was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album. "45" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Though he was involved in worthy collaborations (Burt Bacharach, Anne Sofie Von Otter in the interim, the notoriously prolific Elvis Costello didn't release a proper solo album between 1996's triumph ALL THIS USELESS BEAUTY and this 2002 effort, the longest gap of his career. WHEN I WAS CRUEL is a return to visceral, rock-oriented production and songwriting after the more complex, sophisticated pursuits of his aforementioned collaborative works, and one can feel Costello's joy at getting back to his roots for a while. The maturation of the previous decade isn't invisible here--this is not the sturm und drang of THIS YEAR'S MODEL (or even BLOOD & CHOCOLATE), but this as electric-guitar-based as latter-day EC gets, and the likes of "Tear Off Your Own Head" and ...

CD $8.99  4.7 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain." The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and ...

Grandpaboy Dead Man Shake CD  (2003)

So, like all of Paul Westerberg's loyal fans, you've been dreaming of the day that the great cranky genius of slop-rock would record a blues album, right? OK, probably not, but Westerberg went and did it anyway (under the guise of his alter ego, Grandpaboy), and Dead Man Shake turns out to be a better album than you might expect under the circumstances. Like the previous Grandpaboy long-player, Mono, Dead Man Shake was recorded in Westerberg's basement studio, with "Winthrope Marion Purcival V" once again handling all the instruments, and though one can't help but wish the guy would find a decent drummer, the shabby but emphatic sound of these tracks at once honors the blues-leaning material on deck and suits Westerberg's musical instincts quite well. (The thick echo and chunky guitar textures also recall the sound of the late-'50s/early-'60s Chess Records sessions, though one doubts the similarity was at all intentional.) Dead Man Shake was released around the same time as the soundtrack to Westerberg's ...

Snowdogs Animal Farm CD  (2001)

Stereo
CD $9.79  Audio Samples
Victory Records' 2002 re-release of Snowdogs' Animal Farm allows one to hear the European trio's full-length debut, an average collection of pop-punk songs that has its highs and its lows and an abundance of in betweens. This is not to say Snowdogs aren't a good band -- they seem to possess a knack for writing infectious melodies that get your head to nod -- yet Animal Farm is just adequate, nothing spectacular. At times Snowdogs resemble ...

Rasputina Lost & Found 2nd Edition CD  (2003) Extended Play

Stereo
CD $9.69  4.8 stars Audio Samples
When it came time for Rasputina to release a follow-up to its 2002 critically acclaimed effort Cabin Fever, a covers album wasn't exactly what one would have expected. The reissue of 1999's Lost & Found EP is great supplement to the eerie-cool Rasputina collection, not to mention an interesting look at some of the trio's favorite cuts of yesteryear. Producer Mike Viola (the Candy Butchers) assisted Rasputina for seven cello-drenched songs -- and the presentation is flawless. To imagine classical arrangements around any of these songs is an odd feat. For instance, Pat Benatar's 1981 hit "Fire & Ice": Melora Creager isn't exactly a match for the vocal prowess of Benatar; however, Rasputina's version is beautifully detached. Marilyn ...

Slithering Beast Werewolf Ballads CD  (2007)

CD $10.15
The seeds that have since blossomed into Slithering Beast were first sown in the spring of 2006 by songwriter Nick Dittmeier. Homegrown on the outskirts of Louisville, the songs soon began taking form with clear and simple intent-- to play country music the way it was meant to be played, like our country heroes had in the past. Legends such as Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard, and George Jones influenced the tone for the music of Slithering Beast-- raw, aimless and, ultimately, unapologetic. After many acoustic performances throughout summer and fall ...
