By the late 1990's The Promise Ring had propelled themselves to nearly the top rung of the ferociously melodic brand of music loosely labeled emocore. However, by 2002's WOOD/WATER, the Milwaukee-based quartet completed a transformation of sound begun on 1999's VERY EMERGENCY, an unabashedly poppy and breezy album, yet still unmistakably in the realm of irony-laden indie rock. The opening bars of WOOD/WATER's Wilcoesque, pensive "Get On The Floor" sees the more sedate band asserting "no more guitar songs, it's just nervous energy you're selling to me."
Gone are most of the fire and the sardonic energy of earlier releases, replaced by what practically amounts to an album of modern cowboy ballads, introspective and reflective, with hummable melodies. Far from being dilettantes or bandwagon-jumpers, the foursome led by the high, dulcet tones of Davey von Bohlen proves that it has the innate talent to capably reinvent its sound while retaining sincerity. And on tracks like the adorably self-deprecating "Stop Playing Guitar" and the dreamlike "Become One Anything One Time" with its mournful refrain "I'm just happy you stuck around," the sincerity gives way to sheer beauty.

Promise Ring Wood/Water Songs Wood/Water Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Wood/ Water: The Promise Ring v 2.O Though recent interviews have seen them expressing distaste toward their press moniker as "the princes of emo-pop," it would be foolish to ignore the facts: that juvenile label has given them a fan base and single-handedly put them on the indie-rock map. After 1999's Very Emergency split the vote between those who loved the catchy noise and those who saw it as so much hooky, guitar-pop bunk (the latter of which seemed to be where the band itself stood), it was unquestionably time for a new direction. In order to re-invent, however, The Promise Ring had to face some typically band-slaying challenges -- including a brain-tumor scare and a line-up change -- not to mention the task of forging a new sound and a new method for creating it. Here's the upside: Wood/Water was worth it. Though tracks like "Suffer Never," (a stomping, raucous synth-fest a la Flaming Lips) and "Get On The Floor" (a bobble-headed, Weezer-esque therapy session) hint at a solidarity among TPR and their peers, the album resembles Scotland's Travis more than anything on the current American pop radar. "My Life Is At Home" and "Feed The Night" are dead-ringers for Up-era R.E.M., while "Letters To The Far Reaches" features Simon and Garfunkel-style harmonies (and sentiment). Ultimately, the Promise Ring's necessary experiment sounds closer to their weepy side-project Vermont than it does to any of their previous efforts. But the venture is a success and should please their true fans as well as fans of true music. Submitted by a reviewer (Alaska, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Wood/Water CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Built To Spill Ancient Melodies Of The Future CD (2001)
Wood/Water album
$10.45 Built To Spill abandoned any strictly lo-fi leanings long before ANCIENT MELODIES OF THE FUTURE, the band's fifth full-length release, but it is with this album that the trio's near-perfect balance of indie- (almost math-) rock and surprisingly irresistible pop hooks hits stride for a full, satisfying LP. ANCIENT ...
| | Tanya Donelly Beautysleep CD (2002)
Wood/Water CD music
$22.09 Tanya Donelly's long-awaited second solo album, coming nearly five full years after her solo debut LOVESONGS FOR UNDERDOGS, owes more to the gauzy, angular dream pop of her days in Throwing Muses than her comparatively mainstream mid-'90s stint as the leader of the much more accessible Belly. Where LOVESONGS FOR UNDERDOGS ...

Wood/Water songs
$14.99 Far too much attention has been focused on this album's tortured history; band makes weird album, label rejects it, band buys it back and puts it out a year later through another arm of the same corporation. For the record, wildly overexcited Radiohead comparisons aside, the album's not that weird--it merely ventures a bit further down the sonic-shambles roads explored on the band's previous two releases. As has been noted elsewhere, the most valid reference point for the occasional pop ...

Wood/Water CD music
$41.79 Grand Funk Railroad continued to move further into the pop/rock mainstream with this hit album. They are aided considerably in this aim by the ultra-slick production of Jimmy Ienner, a producer best known for his work with the Raspberries: songs like "Runnin'" and "Memories" boast rich yet punchy horn and string arrangements that beef up the group's sound without softening its energetic edge. The album's combination of high-gloss production ...
