| | Reggae Gold 2009 CDs (2009) With DVD
Rosaria CD music
$13.69 For reggae fans, the 2000s will go down in history as a decade in which dancehall toasting and reggae singing often went hand-in-hand in much the same way that hip-hop and R&B went hand-in-hand. Dancehall toasters incorporated reggae singing throughout the 2000s, and reggae singers (especially the younger ones) didn't hesitate to feature dancehall toasters. The prominence of dancehall is evident on REGGAE GOLD 2009, which is by no means dancehall ...

| | Sinead O'Connor Throw Down Your Arms CD (2005)
Rosaria songs
$12.39 Rather than showcasing tunes by her hero Bob Marley, O'Connor opts to cover songs by his renowned peers Lee "Scratch" Perry and Peter Tosh, as well as a handful of tracks by Burning Spear, going for an authentic Jamaican vibe by recording in the island's iconic Tuff Gong studios. Sly & Robbie's backing is as proficient and propulsive as ever, creating a thoroughly organic atmosphere that O'Connor revels in, particularly on Burning Spear's fierce "Marcus Garvey" and Perry's sauntering "Vampire." Though it had potential as a misstep, THROW DOWN YOUR ARMS comes off without a hitch, highlighting the talents of all artists involved.
Although it's tough to say whether this or Willie Nelson's COUNTRYMAN ...

| | Peter Tosh Legalize It CD (1976) Remastered
Rosaria CD music
$6.25 After spending 12 years as a member of Bob Marley's Wailers, Peter Tosh was eager to break free from the shadow of the legendary frontman. In 1976, he released LEGALIZE IT, still one of the most significant albums in the history of reggae. The title track expresses one of Tosh's many political causes, justifying the legalization of marijuana as a remedy for various medical ailments. "Burial" is one of several tracks that features the talents of the Wailers' stand-out lead guitarist, Al Anderson.
Tosh adds his own seasoning to the reggae pot as he incorporates keyboards in "Whatcha Gonna Do" and synthesizers and sound effects on "Igziabeher." "Ketchy Shuby," a sing-along about fooling around, features the background vocal talents of Rita Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Judy Mowatt. Tosh's life ended too early, and LEGALIZE IT is the strongest testament to his legacy. Take a listen, and share the spirit of his genius.
After years of being overshadowed by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh left the Wailers to pursue a solo career. Released in 1976, Legalize It is a bold statement that Peter Tosh had arrived and was a creative force in his own right. Although he explores some issues of spirituality, this is Tosh's most lightweight album in the sense that it is his least political. This is not meant as a criticism -- in fact, Tosh's playfulness and joy ("Ketchy Shuby") only add to the album's charm. He does make political statements (the title track celebrates and promotes the use of marijuana), ...
| | Cadillacs Complete Josie Sessions CDs (1995) (Import) Box Set; Germany
Rosaria music CDs
$104.45 This box is really the CD descendant of Murray Hill Records' early-'80s-era LP set, which included lots of outtakes. It seems like complete and absolute overkill to put out four CDs on a vocal quintet that only ever charted two songs ("Speedoo," "Peek-A-Boo") nationally, and, yet...it works. But, if you like '50s R&B, doo wop music, or generally just good singing, there's so much here to listen to that will delight you that the package suddenly seems reasonable. The Cadillacs' secret was the sheer variety of their music -- they started out working in a slow romantic vein, and eventually hit it big with one of the fastest-rocking vocal numbers of the period, but they also sang blues (with solid backing, including some fine guitar work) like "(That's) All I Need." Their last sides are still finely sung, but aren't romantic -- rather, they began moving toward comedic and satiric pieces such as "Please Mr. Johnson" and "Jaywalker." The diversity is entertaining in itself, and the only real objection that one could have is the presence of different versions of the same songs. Even these are very interesting, such as the slower alternate version of "Speedoo," which would never have been a hit but does reveal more about the song itself. The sessionography is also a big help in sorting out precisely who was in the group at any given moment after their early sides. ~ Bruce Eder
