LOW TO THE GROUND, the 13-track full-length from Detroit-based indie rock quartet the Waxwings, contains the songs "Keeping the Sparks," "Sleepy Head," and "Untied," among others.
If jangly guitar rock is a dead art form, no one told Detroit's Waxwings. Thankfully, lead songwriter and singer Dean Fertita and his band of merry janglers still keep the faith and hold a torch for the glory days of three guitar and harmonizing vocals as practiced by such rock & roll luminaries as the Byrds, Big Star, and, well, the Beatles. It's hard to argue with such smart, heartbroken but hopeful narrative tunes as "Keeping the Sparks," "Into the Scenery," and "Ten O'Clock Your Time" -- all fantastic little chunks of American guitar pop storytelling goodness. But what sets Waxwings apart from their guys with guitars contemporaries is the multi-faceted approach -- from their multiple lead singer stance to their effortless stylistic variations to songwriting and performing. That and the band's apparent understanding that glib hooks and shimmering guitars lines alone do not a great guitar band make. Waxings balance the introspective with the celebratory, the dark with the light and the bitter with the sweet, with a combination of considered economy and emotional honesty. Yes, Fertita is the ostensible leader of this group, but Dominic Romano's heartbreaking lead vocals and the harmonies between the group's singers are just as crucial as Fertita's seamless songwriting in setting the band apart from such easy-baked new pop heroes as Zumpano and Apples in Stereo. Wistful, romantic, and just grounded enough to really take flight, Low to the Ground is a promising debut. ~ Chris Handyside
The Japanese version comes with two bonus cuts.

Magnet (p.81) - "The Byrds-via-R.E.M. jangle of the Waxwings' debut was a refreshing change of pace..." Magnet (1-2/01, p.45) - Included in Magnet's "20 Best Albums of 2000" - "...The meticulously retro production [here] might bring a contented Buddha grin to the face of guru Phil Spector, even on a bad day." Low To The Ground songs
$11.18 (MP3 Available for Download) With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place ...

Low To The Ground songs
$18.79 FRIDAY ON MY MIND, the album from celebrated Aussie rockers The Easybeats, returns in this remastered rerelease.
Friday on My Mind, produced by Shel Talmy and recorded in England, captures the Easybeats at just about their peak, combining all of the best elements in the evolution of their sound under one cover. The Easybeats were still one of the most energetic outfits in rock music, with a raw, highly animated guitar attack, but they were trying (and largely succeeding with) ever more complex vocal harmony parts and some staccato guitar harmony as well that was pretty impressive, and at this stage they were working with a brace of gorgeous Harry Vanda/George Young originals. The ubiquitous title track is in excellent company, surrounded by an array of mid- to late-60's British rock treasures: a killer garage punk rendition of "River Deep, Mountain High," with a superb performance by Stevie Wright and what sounds almost like a sitar buried somewhere in the midst of the crisp electric guitars; "Do You Have a Soul," with its abrupt tempo changes, cascading choruses, chiming guitars, and hooks that seem to flow into each other effortless; "Saturday Night," with more sitar-like sounds beneath the radiant choruses and rhythm guitar hooks; the dramatic, angst-ridden "You Me, We Love," on which Vanda's guitar playing becomes as intense as Wright's wrenching vocal performance; "Pretty Girl," with its crunchy rhythm guitar sound and catchy lyric hooks and choruses; and "Made My Bed Gonna Lie in It," a punk anthem nearly as catchy and well-played as "I'm Not Like Everybody Else." Not everything on this album is as successful as these cuts, but it is all good listening, even the eerie, original album finale, "See Line Woman." In fact, only the rendition of Leiber and Stoller's "Hound Dog" may be out of place, and even it works as a change of pace. The label of "Australia's Beatles" may have proved an overstatement to some, but one can get a good look at its basis on this album -- it's loaded with actual and potential hit singles, yet it doesn't come off as lightweight in any way. ~ Bruce Eder
Occasionally, even a great, well-nigh perfect album can get better -- twice. Friday on My Mind, as produced by Shel Talmy and recorded in England, captured the Easybeats at just about their peak, combining all of the best elements in the evolution of their sound under one cover. | | Fats Waller Complete Victor Piano Solos CD (2006)
Low To The Ground album
$24.45 This two CD collection brings together all the studio piano solos Waller recorded for Victor. It is an amazing corpus, and doubly interesting as Fats performs many of his numerous compositions. His most important solo recordings other than his Victor sides, are the movements of his 'London Suite', added here as a bonus on Disc Two. To round out this collection, we included all the piano solo tracks from an extended 1939 radio transcription session, on which he had previously recorded quintet, organ and vocal tracks. They present Fats Waller's only existing recorded renditions of the beautiful standard 'Poor Butterfly' and Handy's perennial 'Saint Louis Blues'. The last track, taken from another 1939 transcription session, shows Fats improvising on a popular opera number. Definitive. 2006.
Thomas "Fats" Waller was the first jazz organist. He also helped to develop and establish the style of music commonly known as swing; was possessed of an outrageous sense of humor; sang however the hell he felt like singing, and made a point of cutting up whenever possible, particularly when he had to navigate a seemingly endless stream of Tin Pan Alley lyrics. All of his traits and accomplishments sometimes ...
