While This Will Be Laughing Week relied on three-chord riffs, Ultimate Fakebook's Open up and Say Awesome switches up the magnitude for a fresh punk-pop approach. The band is tight, far more than they've ever been, and the energy is infectious. Frontman Bill McShane is quick-mouthed, and songs like "Before You Leave" and the twangy cool of "Inside Me, Inside You" mosh around the likes and losses of love. "Wrestling Leap Year" is oddly similar to the riveting guitar rock of Killing Joke while showcasing some of Ultimate Fakebook's best work. Ultimate Fakebook is more like Weezer's second cousin -- not sappy enough to be emo, not angry enough to be post-grunge. Open up and Say Awesome is a pure rock record, decadent in the rawness of it all. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

Open Up And Say Awesome
$12.59 Sting had a lot to prove on his first post-Police effort, and he proved himself up to the task of establishing a distinctive identity as a solo artist. Instead of replicating his reggae-tinged Police style, he ventured into new realms, hiring top drawer American jazz musicians like Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland and drum monster Omar Hakim to accompany him on the kind of harmonically sophisticated ...

Open Up And Say Awesome
$43.09 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING, the U.S. debut of London-based trio Dum Dums, contains that rarest of combinations--good songs and lots of creativity. Sprinkling their songs with an indie rock vibe and plentiful doses of humor, Dumdums created quite a buzz for themselves without major market radio play in America.
"Everything" and "Can't Get You Out of My Thoughts" are one part Green Day and two parts Supergrass, while some of the other songs that make IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING a worthy major label debut are "Caught Me in a Trap," "Until My Ship Comes In," and "Killing Me With Kindness."
The British trio plays good-natured pop-punk ...

| | Randall Bramblett Thin Places CD (2004)
Open Up And Say Awesome
$10.95 On his fifth album as leader -- and his second for New West -- wily Southern singer/songwriter Randall Bramblett keeps his cards close to the rock and roll vest, and cranks out songs that ring so large, they're almost anthems. While there a thousand songwriters who deserve more attention than they get, it's as a singer that Bramblett separates himself from the pack. His gritty, grainy, in-your-face delivery makes no apologies and takes no prisoners -- he conveys emotion in every syllable. On Thin Places, he teams up with Nash Vegas producer and session bassist Michael Rhodes, and co-writes with mate Jason Slatton on more than half of the album's 11 selections. Along with his regular band -- which is a diverse unit of crack players who include guitarists Slatton, Kenny Greenberg, and Davis Causey, as well as drummer Shawn Pelton, while Rhodes handles the bass chores -- Bramblett takes the country out of Southern rock, the hooks out of radio-friendly pop, and the roundness out of rock attack, and offers a smoking little record of songs that have at their heart a poetic intensity, an emotional delivery, and a rough-hewn grace. Standout ...

Open Up And Say Awesome
$16.45 WHOShevy SmithWHENI arrived on the 16th day of February in 1983.WHEREI grew up on a small farm in central Kansas. It was the type of place where boys still drive souped-up muscle cars, and Saturday nights consist of parties around a bonfire.WHATAt the age of four, I began playing the piano and picked up guitar when I was thirteen. I write on both instruments -- and on airplanes, road trips, and Taco Bell napkins…WHYThe need to connect with others is definitely the motivation behind why I play. Call me idealistic, but I truly believe that music is the catalyst for happiness and understanding in most of our lives. It helps us sort through our thoughts. If I can offer that sense of clarity to a listener through a song, then I feel somewhat worthwhile and useful.HOWMost of my songs are very much based upon first hand experience. I find it sort of difficult to write an impersonal song that evokes any kind of emotion. I am completely enamored by imagery, so I tend to spend a lot of time trying to paint an accurate landscape, or picture, for the listener. The story line in a song is much like a little movie to me. If I am writing about a boy in a beat-up four-wheel drive, I could also tell you what color ...
