| | Carlo Actis Dato Tomorrow Night Gig CD Carlo Actis Dato Discography of CDs
TAO is an acronym formed from the band member's names: Tachibana/Actis Dato/Ohta.
This is a rather strange release, one that could prompt a few jazz critics to threaten to put Carlo Actis Dato in the same category as Eugene Chadbourne. Strike one: Sound quality on Tomorrow Night Gig is somehow hollow, subpar with other Leo releases. Strike two: At times this trio feels like it values kidding around over musicianship. Ideas are thrown in and out vigorously and don't always make sense. If these elements sound negative, on the other hand the album salvages what surely was an exciting evening, completely over the top, including an enthusiastic hooting audience. The Italian saxophonist is joined by Japanese bassist Yasuhiko Tachibana and violinist Keisuke Ohta. The latter brings to the trio the strangest note, what with his fake-Arabic singing and his violin effects (reverb, volume pedal, even distortion in "Ile de Gorèe"). As with Chadbourne, one is often tempted to sneer at incoherent-sounding passages and odd mishaps, unless they are intentional. Take "Saharawi," for instance: a solid groove worthy of a dervish dance, but in the first minutes the bass seems to have issues with the beat -- something screaming amateurishness. And yet elsewhere Tachibana accomplishes marvelous things. So why keep the piece (it's obvious this is not the whole concert, edits have been made, improvisations fade in and out)? Above it all reigns Actis Dato's original spirit and sense of fun ("Red" is calypso), linking this release to his fantastic solo Moonwalker. Puzzling and impassioned. ~ François Couture
With one ear tuned to the street & the other tipped toward his fanciful imagination, Carlo Actis Dato creates a musical universe of disjunctions & jump-cuts while recording live with two Japanese musicians he met in 1999 - the remarkable bassist Yasuhiko
Includes liner notes by Paul De Barros.

Tomorrow Night Gig CD music
$6.79 As of the late 1990s, guitarist and fiddler David Bromberg was in musical semi-retirement, supplementing his day job (making his living buying and selling American-made violins) with the odd club gig. But in the 1970s, he had a thriving career as both a bandleader and a sideman, having played on seminal recordings by Bob Dylan, the Eagles, and Jerry Jeff Walker, among others. This disc ...

| | Josh Kelley For The Ride Home CDs (2003) Bonus CD
Tomorrow Night Gig songs
$12.59 Josh Kelley wears his debt to Dave Matthews very much on his sleeve on this assured debut, using both Matthews' producer and several of the mega-platinum stadium rocker's vocal tricks on a collection of songs that ranges from the radio-friendly "Amazing," through the folksy "Follow You," to the Bic-waving anthem "Old Time Memory."
Kelley's personable vocals and user-friendly songs rely less on jam-band musical athletics than good old-fashioned musicianship courtesy of a backing band that includes Jeff Buckley's former drummer and recalls both that band's interplay and some of the Wallflowers' organ-laced sound. With Kelley's songwriting smarts and an image that cultivates a low-key, singer-songwriter-next-door image, FOR THE RIDE HOME is a high-quality introduction to a refreshingly laid-back, musically assured singer.
This repackaged version of Josh Kelley's enjoyable debut, For the Ride Home, includes a bonus disc with two new songs and acoustic versions of the original ...
