Fabric 01
$25.79 The original group's debut album was a then-groundbreaking meld of progressive rock with classical and jazz influences. The album is a little clunky by today's standards, and far druggier than the later group in its ambience (cofounders Keith Relf and Jim McCarty were the heavily psychedelic half of the final lineup of the Yardbirds, which made them anathema to Jimmy Page), but vocalist Jane Relf had a striking individual style, and the classical influence was unique for its time. [The 2002 Collector's Choice reissue cuts "Sea" and the second version of "Island" from the track listing.] ~ Bruce Eder
'The Sound of Renaissance' is a 2002 mix series from Renaissance, the undisputed leaders of the 'progressive sound'. This 2CD package incorporates all that is synonymous with the infamous brand, from the beautiful laminated packaging to the very best, upfront tracks currently creating the buzz within the house scene. A large number of vocal tracks have been included in the album, a direct attempt to again further the appeal of the ...

| | Deep Dish George Is On CDs (2005)
Fabric 01
$13.69 Initial release includes an enhanced bonus disc. Enhancements include videos for "Say Hello" and "Flashdance."
Seven years after their last album of original productions and eight long months after the leadoff single "Flashdance" stormed the clubs, Deep Dish returned with George Is On. A slicker, more extroverted effort than their 1998 effort Junk Science, George Is On finds that album's main vocalist/lyricist Richard Morel back with the duo. The guitar-heavy "Sacramento" is one of the best cuts yet to come from the relationship, with the more laid-back and foggy "Everybody's Wearing My Head" running a close second. Besides Morel, plenty of hypnotic, nocturnal instrumentals recall the duo's well-respected debut, but the flippant, cheeky "Flashdance" and a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" with Stevie Nicks guesting explore the worlds of anthems and arguably camp, something that's been slowly developed on the multiple Deep Dish mix albums that have appeared since their proper debut. The mash-up of "Flashdance" and Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" that closes the track list is only a bit clever and entirely anti-climatic if the listener considers it part of the album instead of a throwaway bonus. Otherwise, George Is On may be a shade too comfortable for anyone thinking Deep Dish should always sound like the future, ...

| | Truth Hurts Truthfully Speaking CD (2002)
Fabric 01
$33.25 Truth Hurts' debut album has at least one bona fide hit in the DJ Quik-produced, Bollywood-laced "Addictive," a sultry sleeper with old-school, hot-fun-in-the-summertime conga accompaniment that is a necessary accessory to any al fresco summer cruising around town. "Next To Me" is similarly scorching, a slow-burning exercise in delayed gratification. There's also evidence the former Shari Watson has a hard head on her shoulders, in the form of "Jimmy," a song about a soon-to-be ex-lover who's just gotten 10 years in the penitentiary ("you can't come around no more...I'm gon' miss you, that's for sure"). Jazzy and downtempo, TRUTHFULLY SPEAKING is undoubtedly bedroom-oriented, complete with old-school electric piano and strings that hit in all the right places, and should propel Truth Hurts into the hearts and minds of an appreciative public forthwith.
Japanese version features one bonus track.

Fabric 01
$12.65 No, it's not just you. A few of the songs on Thump's Old School '80s compilation -- like Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" and Rufus & Chaka Khan's "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up)" -- came out in the '70s. And one inclusion -- Bell Biv DeVoe's "Poison" -- came out in 1990. Even with the inexplicable slip, it's hard to fault the contents of a disc featuring nothing but number one R&B hits. While Thump has churned out piles of discs that look a lot like this, the focus puts a rather fresh spin on what they do, especially since their '80s-focused discs have tended to neglect the ...
