Though frequently mislabelled a goth band because of their penchant for fake blood and dark eye makeup, the all-girl combo Subtonix is actually closer both in spirit and sound to late-'70s bands like Essential Logic and Fuzzbox. Though Jessy Panic howls and moans like a heartsick Siouxsie Sioux, she is countered by wailing, skronking saxophone (so drenched in echo it could be coming from the bottom of a well) and shrieking synths. The songs on Tarantism have a frantic, chug-a-chug quality, built mostly around short, rhythmic keyboard and basslines (the band has no guitar player). And though Subtonix could be accused of writing the same song ten times (that song being Fuzzbox's "Love Is the Slug"), their music is so singular it is difficult to raise too many objections. Panic chants like a witch during "Black Nails in My Coffin," infusing lyrics like, "I hear her screaming down the hall" with no small amount of dread. The mood lightens occasionally (the slightly up-tempo "My Favorite Way to Die" is one instance), but mostly Tarantism plays to the band's strengths: driving rhythms augmented by foghorn-like bursts of synth and sax. To their great credit, Subtonix manages to make that simple formula formidable enough to, well, raise the dead. ~ J. Edward Keyes

Absolute Classic Masterpieces documents the dark jangle pop of Felt between the years of 1979 and 1985; it's a best-of collection for a band that always deserved more attention. The tracks run in reverse chronological order, starting with "Primitive Painters," a song that charts the territory where the Cocteau Twins, the Fall, and the Smiths overlap, and ending with the very first demo single "Index." The order of the tracks means that you are listening to the band devolve into its influences, and the effect is enjoyable. "Primitive Painters" is a lost treat if ever one existed; along with the next three tracks, it was produced by Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins. "Primitive Painters" also features Elizabeth Frazer of the Cocteau Twins on vocals. Guthrie is not the only famed producer whose work appears here; three John Leckie tracks are also included, from the Strange Idols Pattern & Other Short Stories album. In conjunction with the 2006 DVD documentary of record collector Joe Bussard, Dust-to-Digital released this companion CD, featuring 19 tracks in some of the kind of styles -- rural blues, jazz, and old-timey country music, mostly from the '20s and '30s -- that Bussard loves. Desperate Man Blues: Discovering the Roots of American Music isn't exactly a soundtrack to the documentary, since these records are not featured in their entirety in that film. Rather, it's a survey of some of the highlights of the music in which Bussard specializes, the liner notes featuring track-by-track annotation by Bussard himself. Does the world really need another guitar hero? Rulf Munkes seems to think the answer to that question is "yes." However, when he tries to be the next Satriani or Malmsteen, the result is boring, overblown, and just plain not fun. What he really does well, though, are more straightforward rock cuts that focus more on melody and less on the fast and furious "see how many notes I can play" guitar approach.
