Bluegrass Goes to Town: Pop Songs Bluegrass Style is a 16- song collection of rock, R&B, country, and pop songs done bluegrass style by some of the biggest names in the field: Claire Lynch tackles Joe Cocker's "Hitchcock Highway," IIIrd Tyme Out covers the Platters' "Only You," and Tony Furtado and Alison Krauss do the Beatles' "I Will." This CD will appeal to new fans of bluegrass because of the familiarity of the songs that are covered and the high level of musicianship. Longtime bluegrass fans may find the selection of songs (from "Heartbreak Hotel" to "Bridge Over Troubled Water") a little novelty-ish, but will also be impressed by the musicianship. ~ Tim Sendra Bluegrass Goes To Town: Pop Songs Bluegrass Style Music Bluegrass Goes To Town: Pop Songs Bluegrass Style Songs | 1. | Friend of the Devil - Rice/Hillman/Pedersen |

Bluegrass Goes To Town: Pop Songs Bluegrass Style album
$20.29 Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" is a brief return to the blues-rock of yore, but the ...

$12.09 BLUES ON THE BAYOU won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
Having just turned 73, B.B. King released BLUES ON THE BAYOU as a kind of retrospective look at 50 years of playing the blues. King produced BAYOU himself and recorded it at a remote studio in the heart of Lafayette, Louisiana with the band he'd been playing with for the past 10 years. A relaxed and well-oiled feeling is felt throughout this group of songs, some of which were newly written while others are older numbers that were dusted off and re-recorded specifically ...

| | James Silberstein Song For Micaela CD (2004)
Bluegrass Goes To Town: Pop Songs Bluegrass Style CD music
$16.45 The Young Lion movement has inspired many A&R people at major labels to try marketing hard bop the way they would market rock, R&B, dance music, country, or rap -- in other words, look for newcomers who are young and attractive and don't consider signing anyone over 30 unless he or she is already well established. But thankfully, CAP and other independent labels are smart enough to realize that one of the pleasures of following jazz is discovering bop veterans who, for whatever reason, have been underexposed -- people like James Silberstein, for example. The guitarist, who had been around the New York jazz scene for 25 years when CAP released Song for Micaela in 2004, is neither a Young Lion nor an ultrafamous veteran. Silberstein is, however, a tasteful, seasoned improviser along the lines of Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel, and Joe Pass. No one will accuse Song for Micaela of being the most innovative or groundbreaking release of 2004, but what Silberstein lacks in originality, he makes up for with good taste and a confident sense of swing. Song for Micaela (which boasts trumpeter Randy Brecker and tenor man Eric Alexander as guests) is, on the whole, a very straight-ahead, acoustic-oriented CD; Silberstein is as bop-minded on "Baubles, Bangles and Beads" as he is on Sergio Mendes' "So Many Stars" and the Cole Porter warhorse "Love for Sale." But the disc makes an enjoyable detour into electric jazz-funk territory on Silberstein's own "House Party," which wouldn't have been out of place on one of the albums that Creed Taylor produced for CTI Records in the early '70s. This solid, if conventional, outing demonstrates that Silberstein's guitar playing is worth getting to know. ~ Alex Henderson
