I Am The Blues album
$11.65 After more than a decade of recording for other labels, George Thorogood & the Destroyers moved back to EMI/Capitol for the release of 2009's THE DIRTY DOZEN. Split into two sides and consisting of covers of classic blues songs, some bar band favorites, and a couple of lesser-known tracks, the album digs back into the archives to uncover some buried tracks from the '80s and '90s. What's uncanny is that apart from the tinny sound of the recordings from the late '80s/early '90s, the band and Thorogood sound exactly the same almost two decades later. George still has the same ferocious slide technique, his growling vocals have barely aged, and the band still has the feel of skilled musicians who know how to play it simple. In other words, GT & the Destroyers still rock, and if you were ever a fan, you still should be. The only real problem with this record is that as cool as it is to hear the band's 1991 take on "Six Days on the Road" or their tumble through Howlin' Wolf's "Howlin' for My Baby," it'd be better to hear more of the new tracks. They have a more immediate feel and the group sounds like they're playing for fun ...
| | Etta James: At Last ! CD (1961) Remastered
I Am The Blues CD music
$8.09 Originally released on Argo (4003). Includes liner notes by Andy McKaie.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
When Etta James signed with Chess Records in 1960, the label decided to pair her raw, bluesy singing with a full backing band and lush orchestrations. AT LAST!, her Chess debut, shows the formula working to fine effect, as it highlights the singer's facility with different approaches including torchy balladry, jazz crooning, growling blues, and R&B shouting. She sounds equally at home on Willie Dixon stompers ("I Just Want To Make Love To You"), standards ("Stormy Weather"), and down-tempo soul workouts (the beautiful title track).
James performs several duets with Moonglows vocalist (and then-boyfriend) Harvey Fuqua, including Dixon's "Spoonful," the duo's self-penned "My Heart Cries," and ...
| | Howlin Wolf His Best CD (1997)
I Am The Blues music CDs
$15.55 Recorded between 1951 & 1964. Includes liner notes by Mark Humphrey.
Since even Howlin' Wolf's worst recordings are compelling in some regard, it should go without saying that HIS BEST, a collection of his finest Chess sides, is magnificent from beginning to end. Possessed of fine guitar and harp skills, a voice that could separate skin from bone, and a sheer magnetism and charisma that knew (and has known) no equal, Howlin Wolf is one of 20th century music's greatest performers.
Every track here is stellar, and a few like "Evil," "Smokestack Lightnin'," "Back Door Man" and "Spoonful," will have listeners wearing out the repeat button on their disc players. Wolf's ferocious delivery can inspire terror and delight ("Three Hundred Pounds of Joy") equally, and the power of his voice can make you want to shout, laugh, cry or destroy some ...

| | Fleetwood Mac Then Play On CD (1969)
I Am The Blues CD music
$9.65 There were 2 different versions of this LP, each with slightly different tracks. The CD contains all tracks from both versions.
Led by singer-guitarist Peter Green, the first version of Fleetwood Mac was one of England's premier bands and possibly the greatest white blues band ever to emerge from the '60s blues revival. 1969's THEN PLAY ON is their best album and Green's pinnacle achievement. Heavily influenced by Otis Rush, Green had an unusually lyrical style for a blues musician, able to draw on flamenco, folk, even classical guitar--all of which make an appearance in the ambitious instrumental coda to his major opus, ...
| | Silver Apples/Contact CD (1968)
I Am The Blues music CDs
$12.05 Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
When the Silver Apples were formed in the mid-60's, Simeon Coxe and Danny Taylor had no way of knowing that they were forging the prototype of experimental electronic music. Connecting over a dozen oscillators, Coxe created a homemade synthesizer which produced a world of futuristic bleeps, sweeps, distortions, and repetitious basslines. With the addition of Taylor's drums, they sounded like The Velvet Underground fronted by Nikola Tesla. In 1968 they released their eponymous album. Where their sound wasn't met simply with perplexity, it was met with perplexity ...

| | Sue Foley Where The Action Is CD (2002)
I Am The Blues album
$15.39 Sue Foley's seventh studio album in a decade successfully follows on the heels of 2000's terrific Love Comin' Down. Less atmospheric and harder rocking, Foley writes or co-writes all but three tracks, and proves herself as talented a composer as singer and guitar slinger. There's a bit of a Sheryl Crow feel to lots of this, but Foley stays locked in a blues vein, even on the more melodic rockers like "Baby Where Are You," "Get Yourself Together," and the mid-tempo title track. Colin Linden's hands-off production lets the songs breath, and the singer sounds loose, relaxed, and in control throughout, especially on ballads like the emotional "Let It Go." "Vertigo Blues" wades into primitive and swampy Creedence waters, aided by the album's only bass-less backing, featuring Linden on eerie, slithering slide and Bryan Owings' dark, pounding drums. A lumbering stab at the Stones' "Stupid Girl" sounds too self-conscious, but versions of Etta James' sexy "Roll With Me Henry" and an acoustic version of the obscure traditional Delta tune "Down the Big Road Blues" (best known from a version by Mattie Delaney) prove that Foley can be simultaneously sensuous and tough. Veteran backing musicians like Wilco's Ken Coomer and keyboardist Richard Bell never hog the spotlight, keeping the attention on the songs and Foley's short but stinging leads. Although she's not taking many chances, those who are already fans of the Canadian blues-rocker will be thrilled to add this rugged release to their collections, and newcomers can effectively begin theirs here. ~ Hal Horowitz
